Yesterday’s New York Times Sunday Book Review (Sunday, Dec. 26, 2010) includes a review, by Dani Shapiro, of local author Claire Dederer‘s new book Poser: My Life in Twenty-three Yoga Poses.

The review begins with a mention of Green Lake:

Early in “Poser,” Claire Dederer describes a regular walk she takes with a new-mom friend in her North Seattle neighborhood: “We made a circle around Green Lake, and so our talk traveled. We started with our babies and tried to decipher all the new rules we had to follow. The talk opened out to work, maybe briefly touched the real world, and then, like a tight magic circle, closed back in on babies again. It was a dark enchantment.”

The book, which arrived in stores last Thursday, examines the culture surrounding motherhood in North Seattle, as well as the author’s experiences with yoga after putting her back out while breastfeeding her baby daughter.

From the NYT review:

“We were a generation of hollow-eyed women, chasing virtue,” she tells us. “We, the mothers of North Seattle, were consumed with trying to do everything right.” North Seattle — a first cousin of Park Slope, the Upper West Side, Berkeley and dozens of other such enclaves around the country — was a place where attachment parenting was all the rage. Kids weren’t weaned until they spoke in full sentences. Families all slept in the same bed; ate the same organic, locally produced food; and lived in an enriching environment safe from the dangers of plastic toys and disposable diapers.

A book tour begins on Jan. 9 on Bainbridge Island, the author’s current home, and continues through the month of January. She will make several appearances in Seattle, including one at Ravenna Third Place Books (6504 20th Ave NE) on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 7 p.m.

My Green Lake tipster Alaina sent us word of some very cool workshops coming to Green Lake Park:

Sam Salwei of Team YogaSlackers and Adelaide of the Shimmy Sisters and America’s Got Talent are traveling over 5200 miles and stopping in at least 12 cities during a 31 day tour of the western United States- “Discovering Harmony in Duality” focusing on slackline, hoop dance, and partner acrobatic workshops.

SEATTLE made it to their list of cities to visit (heck yes!) and I am so incredibly honored to be hosting the following workshops for these amazing instructors:

Monday June 28th 6pm-9pm Dynamic Duo Acrobatics

The dynamics of working with another person acrobatically can be like learning to walk again. Instead this time you’ll be Flying! Sam and Adelaide are bringing to you a way to sync up harmoniously and connect through counter balances, partner yoga, and breath. Like the yin yang symbol, acrobatic partner movements can leave you unclear on where one thing begins and the other ends. After looking at the world upside down you may not even know up from down. But then again, it’s all relative No partner or experience necessary, though yoga practice helpful.

Tuesday June 29th 2:30pm – 4:30pm Fundamentals of Slacklining

Offer a unique practice that redefines your sense of balance and mental focus. Great for yogis, climbers, and athletes of all forms, slackline yoga teaches complete body awareness and is an excellent cross training tool. Slackline workshops include the basics of the “slackasana series”, including sitting, kneeling, arm balancing, standing and walking on the line. Taught By Sam Salwei, co founder of yoga slackers, this workshop will surely push you to your limits, where you can find even more possibilities.

Tuesday June 29th 5pm-7pm Fundamentals of Hooping

The circular nature of the hoop provides endless possibilities. Allow Adelaide to get you started with a few tricks will get your wheels spinning and your hoops whirling. Adelaide will teach a combination of both on and off the body hoop manipulation, and introduce playing with the hoop different hoop on different planes and angles. This is a mixed level workshop geared towards beginners. All ages welcome! If you have a hoop bring it, otherwise Adelaide will have some to share, and some for purchase to take home and practice. Caution: very addicting!

Workshops will be DONATION BASED and held at Seattle’s very own Green Lake Park (exact location T.B.A.)

Confirm your attendance on Facebook here and check out their blog for videos, photos, and other fun stuff!

Be sure to tell your friends about this event- it’s going to be a party in the park and I hope to see you there!

This Saturday, Jan 23rd is Yoga Day USA (as designated by the Yoga Alliance, the registry overseeing yoga teachers), and many around the city are offering free yoga for the day to celebrate:

Gordan Kaplan (contact@teamyoga.com) writes:

The good folks at the Wallingford Center (Amy Singer) are donating space for me to conduct a free yoga class as part of that larger national event. Saturday morning from 9 am – 10:30 I’ll be teaching in that vacant retail space on the second floor near the North entrance. Space is limited, but if you want to share this with the neighborhood you are welcome to do so – after all, it’s for them.

OmCulture (2210 N. Pacific St.) down on Pacific writes:

Join thousands across the country for Yoga Day USA, a history-making celebration where yogis, novices, couch potatoes and triathletes, young, old, and everyone in between join together to stretch mind, body, and spirit through the practice of yoga. … Join in the celebration with Yogalife and OmCulture and enjoy free classes throughout the day! See the event schedule at http://www.omculture.com/events/yoga-day

And this next one is a bit outside our bailiwick, but it’s free and in walking distance, so let’s go for it:

The Phinney Yoga House will be celebrating with free classes all weekend long, January 23rd and 24th. Classes will include pre-natal yoga, family yoga, and all-levels Kripalu Hatha yoga classes. They are a community based yoga studio housed in the Phinney Neighborhood Center (6615 Dayton Ave N).
