JACOB MARLEY’S CHRISTMAS CAROL

“Marley was dead to begin with…” And what happens after that? In this irreverent, funny and moving show, Marley has a chance to escape his own chains by redeeming Scrooge’s heart in 24 hours. In the process, he just might find his own. Described as a “charming, behind-the scenes version of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol,” the show is directed by SPT Managing Director Keith Dahlgren and stars Jim Lapan, Evan Whitfield, Pam Nolte, and Patrick Lennon. Marley is perfect for a sweet ending to a holiday night out.

THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER sponsored by Seattle Children’s Hospital

It’s not a holiday season without SPT’s production of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. This heart-warming, holiday staple, running since 2001, has performed to sold-out crowds each holiday season at the Bathhouse Theater on Green Lake. Under the direction of Artistic and Education Director Shana Bestock, the infamous Herdman kids will take over the church pageant and challenge everyone’s traditional notions of Christmas. See how a story can transform us all, even when told by a misfit group of kids in bed sheets. For small and tall elves alike, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is a sure-fire hit for the holidays.

SHOW INFORMATION

Jacob Marley’s A Christmas Carol performances are: December 2nd-24th.

Earlier this month, SPT unveiled new seats which were the product of a fundraising campaign put on by the theater.
On September 21, 2011, Mayor Mike McGinn announced that his 2012 Proposed Budget would include funding for a new roof at the Green Lake Bathhouse (7312 West Green Lake Dr N), a historic building that the city leases to the Seattle Public Theater (SPT).

The theater is now hopeful that the mayor’s proposal for funding for a new roof will be adopted by the Seattle City Council, along with additional funding for a new HVAC (Heat Ventilation and Air-Conditioning) system.

“This past summer the AC gave up the ghost, challenging our young actors to perform despite the heat and humidity, and every year we pray the furnace makes it through the winter without breaking down (we’ve supplemented with space heaters for the last several years, at great cost and less-than-sufficient heat),” an email from the Seattle Public Theater explains.

The Seattle City Council is currently reviewing the mayor’s proposed budget. A final city budget will be adopted by Friday, December 2.

“In this dynamic, modern-day setting, the language remains Shakespeare’s but the action is in an urban jungle of teenage turf warfare,” reads a press release from SPT. “With little adult oversight, teenagers are left to figure out for themselves what it means to ‘be a man.’ MacBeth is top-dog of the in-crowd, and loyal friend to gang leader Duncan, but when he is told by three weird outsiders that he will be the next leader, Macbeth can’t shake the thirst for power. Driven by what they think is destiny, MacBeth and his sister kill Duncan, but soon find that holding on to power comes at great cost.”

“Seattle Public Theater doesn’t just put on fantastic plays, but it builds a community of lifelong friendships,” says actor Anna Klein. “When I do any show here, I’m surrounded by a cast and crew of people that are talented and enthusiastic.
Sister Helen is an internationally-acclaimed human rights activist and the author of Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account Of The Death Penalty In The United States.

“Dead Man Walking” is Bishop Blanchet’s fall play. Performances will be held Nov. 1 – 6 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. in the Marge Bradburn Studio Theatre.

The performances are part of The Dead Man Walking School Theatre Project.

According to a news release sent by the school, Sister Helen conceived of the project in 1998 after reading in a New Yorker magazine article that Arthur Miller’s play, “Death of a Salesman,” had been performed a million times.

Sister Helen realized that if “Dead Man Walking” could be made into a play, it could also be reproduced endlessly, thereby expanding its impact.

Sister Helen called her friend, Tim Robbins, who wrote, produced and directed the film adaptation of her book, and invited him to write a stage play of her story. Tim accepted the invitation and challenge, soon crafting a powerful stage adaptation.

Instead of taking the play to Broadway, however, Tim decided to use the play as a tool to create deeper reflections on the death penalty in our nation’s high schools and colleges. He required that any school producing the play must also agree to involve at least two other academic departments (law, sociology, criminal justice, etc.) to provide courses related to the death penalty and “Dead Man Walking.” Art and music departments were also encouraged to develop related creative projects. Discussion groups, prison visitation, and other activities were soon added to the mix.

Since the launch of the project in the fall of 2003, more than 200 high schools and colleges across the country have produced the play, conducted academic courses on the death penalty, and brought the issue to life on their campuses through art, music, and public education and action events.
