Scenes from today's street mural painting party in north Green Lake

A street mural was painted today (Friday, Oct. 1, 2010) on Stone Ave N between N 80th St and Green Lake Drive N, next to Bethany Community Church and across the street from Daniel Bagley Elementary School.

Truly a collaborative effort, the street mural came alive after over a year of planning. On behalf of Sustainable Green Lake, Megan Horst and Pennie O’Grady proposed the street mural and coordinated with Sarah Buehler Neill, Operation Director of Bethany Community Church, and the Green Lake community.

Residents, including City Repair Consultant Cheryl Klotz, attended several meetings and selected the water theme (which includes little bees). The theme was chosen to honor and reflect nearby Green Lake, the Daniel Bagley Elementary School “Bagley Bees,” and the surrounding neighborhood. The water theme also alludes to Bethany Community Church’s annual campaign to provide funds for clean water projects in Uganda.

The mural is funded by the city’s Department of Neighborhoods Matching Fund and a Small and Simple grant. Neighborhood Traffic Operations at the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) provided oversight and coordination.

Street mural painting party this Sunday in north Green Lake (UPDATE – rescheduled to Friday)

Update: Due to rain and wet pavement on Sunday, the Stone Avenue Street Painting has been re-scheduled to Friday, October 1, from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m.

This Sunday (Sept. 26, 2010) between 12p.m.- 5 p.m., a street mural will be painted on Stone Ave N between N 80th St and Green Lake Drive N, next to Bethany Community Church and across the street from Daniel Bagley Elementary School.

The block will be closed to traffic from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

In order to prepare the “street canvas,” on Saturday the street will be pressure washed and brush-scrubbed. On Sunday the design will be chalked in, painted and dried.

Everyone, including kids and families, is welcome to join in and help with painting. “This will be fun,” says organizer Pennie O’Grady, “and we will all enjoy the results over the months and years to come.”

O’Grady describes Sunday afternoon as a neighborhood party. “There will be food, and you are encouraged to bring a dessert dish to share. Of course this is a get-your-hands-and-clothes-dirty event, so be prepared,” she says.

Up to 200 residents and church-goers are expected to join in and lend a hand to the painting effort on Sunday. During the work, there will be educational tables set up on the street providing information about ways to care for water, including rainwater harvesting, rain-gardens and bio swales.

“Lots of work has already gone into this,” says Pennie O’Grady of Sustainable Green Lake. “We are excited to finally share this in a big way!”

Can you help out in the final weeks leading up to the street painting party?

Pennie is asking for help over the next two weeks distributing fliers about the event to neighborhood residences, bulletin boards, and shop windows. Help is also needed on the day of the event (Sunday, September 26), and possibly the day before. Volunteers will be asked to help with street preparation, quality control, energy flow guidance, clean up, and other tasks. “We need many hands,” Pennie says, “and some extra leadership.”

Final design chosen for street painting on Stone Ave N

A design has been chosen for the street painting that is going in on Stone Ave N between N 80th St and N 81st St, next to Bethany Community Church and across the street from Daniel Bagley Elementary School.

Last summer, Sustainable Green Lake put out a call for for design proposals to community members and artists. The designs were eventually narrowed down to two finalists. Feedback was received from approximately 300 people, including neighbors, Sustainable Green Lake members, Bethany Community Church members, and Daniel Bagley Elementary School families.

The final design includes elements that the community asked for: water imagery, simple and bright colors, and bees (a nod to the Bagley Bees).

Sustainable Green Lake is now preparing to paint the street using supplies purchased with funds from the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods.

All are invited to a street painting party on Sunday, September 26, 2010. Come anytime between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. There will be light refreshments and educational activities at the event. Paint brushes will be provided. All ages are welcome.

Seattle's Edible Neighborhoods campaign

The Green Lake Green Thumbs, a group affiliated with Sustainable Green Lake, has launched a new campaign: Edible Neighborhoods.

The goal of the campaign is

to empower everyone in Seattle and everywhere else to take the first steps toward turning our communities into better wildlife corridors and resources for healthy, home-grown foods. [ ... ] We work to improve our neighborhood’s role as a functioning, healthy ecosystem where humans and wildlife mutually thrive. We support and inspire the community to engage in projects that restore and enhance ecological function to meet human and wildlife needs.

Elise from Edible Neighborhoods shares the following information about the Edible Neighborhoods website:

Start building community, food security, and a healthy ecosystem – it’s easy!

Do you or someone you know want to improve your yard for people and wildlife but don’t know where to start?

Edible Neighborhoods is a small new website offering basic suggestions for adding edible and Pacific Northwest native plants to your garden. The recommended plants have been selected for ease of growing in the Puget Sound area, regardless of soil building or gardening skills.

View new Aurora mural (and eat free pizza!) on Tuesday, March 23

The next Sustainable Green Lake (SGL) gathering will be Tuesday, March 23, 2010, 6:30 p.m., at DaVinci’s Pizza (7617 Aurora Ave N).

The “Awake to a New Aurora” neighborhood mural will be unveiled.

Come for free pizza and be among the first to view a new neighborhood mural on Aurora!

This month SGL is meeting on the 4th (not the 3rd) Tuesday at DaVinci Pizza, 7615 Aurora Ave. Gather at 6:30 pm and celebrate the unveiling of the first of two neighborhood murals.

Those working on this project have hopes of transforming that “black hole” feeling on that stretch of Aurora, increasing pedestrian friendliness and bridging the Greenwood and Greenlake neighborhoods.

This is a multi-functional piece of imagineering as art. Zach Bohnenkamp, John Osgood & Kevin Sullivan from Seattle Mural Art, a local team whose most recent work was installed next to Taproot Theatre after the arsons, have been commissioned for the new Aurora murals. The mural features the theme “Awake to a New Aurora” with a vibrant scene transistioning from green space to a rising sun backdropped with the downtown cityscape view as you go over the Aurora Bridge.

Next Month, April 20th (Third Tuesday): This Gathering will be an experience in self-organizing, sustainable governance! If you like high quality conversation, if you wonder if there’s a better way to make collective decisions, if you want to bring your unique voice or (un)tested ideas to the SGL table, if you want deeper engagement in your community (wherever you live) — THIS GATHERING IS FOR YOU! Not only will you be involved in shaping SGL, you will be learning skills that can inform your work in other organizations, civic engagement, etc.

What will Sustainable Green Lake look like as Leif, Megan and Christian transition to their new home outside of Green Lake? Join the Core Team and other SGL members as we welcome DeAnna Martin (Dynamic Facilitator from the Center for Wise Democracy) to help us re-vision and extend our neighborhood group. We’ve received so much appreciation for all the work we’ve already done — now we want to more effectively and broadly develop what we have begun and include you!

Potluck at 6:30 pm. Presentation begins at 7 pm with a brief introduction on possibilities for system-wide sustainable governance. At Bethany Community Church on N 80th and Stone Ave N (8023 Green Lake Dr N). Upstairs in Classroom A. Bring a food dish to share, and your own dinnerware if you can.

Aurora mural unveiling celebration March 23rd

We just got word from Megan of Sustainable Green Lake that the mural by Seattle Mural Art at 7615 Aurora Ave N will be ready for viewing in two weeks:

Volunteer to help build food gardens in Green Lake

Sustainable Green Lake has put out a call for volunteers interested in participating in Spring into Bed, “Seattle’s first annual city-wide food garden building event.” Spring into Bed is scheduled for Saturday, May 8th, 2010.

Spokespeople bike rides coming to Green Lake

Exciting news from Sustainable Green Lake:

Volunteers needed – Spokespeople bike rides from Green Lake? How would you like to help get more people out on bikes? Spokespeople rides are led by Cascade Bicycle Club certified ride leaders and are for people of all levels of ridership, from new and reluctant riders to those fully road savvy. Sustainable Wallingford rides once a month on the 1st Saturday. We could start a chapter in Green Lake and ride together! Sustainable Green Lake presents a free showing of "The Yes Men Fix the World"

Here is a movie worth seeing once, twice, three times! Sustainable Green Lake presents ”The Yes Men Fix the World” In this hilarious comedy, the Yes Men pose as top executives of corporations they hate. Like a Dow Chemical spokesperson on BBC Live giving breaking news and promising to clean up the Bhopal catastrophe site, and at business conferences throughout the world. This film drew a packed house in December at the Wallingford Meaningful Movies. We will offer a chance for discussion after the screening.

Showing Tuesday, Feb 16 at 7 pm at Bethany Community Church on N 80th and Stone Ave N (8023 Green Lake Dr N). Potluck at 6:30 pm. Bring a food dish to share, and your own dinnerware if you can. We will be back in the CE Auditorium. See you there!
