Author of “Soccer Dreams: Playing the Seattle Sounders FC Way” to visit Mockingbird Books

Children’s author Clare Hodgson Meeker will be at Mockingbird Books (7220 Woodlawn Ave NE) on Friday, Sept. 30, 2011 at 4 p.m. Clare will share the story behind her book Soccer Dreams: Playing the Seattle Sounders FC Way and will give tips on teamwork from the Sounders FC. Participants will also make their own soccer balls out of plastic bags tied with nylon rope. The event is appropriate for ages 7-12. Seattle Sounders Defender James Riley settles into his new Green Lake home

Seattle Sounders Defender James Riley has moved to the Green Lake neighborhood. James has played with the Sounders since 2009. He started the first Sounders FC home opener vs. New York, and he has led all Seattle field players in minutes played over past two seasons. Last year, James was named Sounders FC Defender of the Year and Humanitarian of the Year. He has worked with with Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Gilda’s Club, Ronald McDonald House, Children’s Hospital, America SCORES and Washington Special Olympics. Futsal Festival coming to Green Lake Community Center

  The Seattle Futsal Academy is bringing the first annual Futsal Festival to the Green Lake Community Center (7201 E Green Lake Dr N) on Saturday, June 25, 2011, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The free all-ages event will feature futsal games and instruction from a national futsal champion. There will also be Brazilian music and capoeira and zumba presentations. Futsal is the official form of indoor soccer recognized by FIFA. Registration for Woodland Soccer Club to open May 1

The Woodland Soccer Club (WSC) will open registration for 2011 Fall Recreational Soccer on Sunday, May 1, 2011. 1,100 kids and teens participate every year on WSC’s recreation soccer teams. The organization serves families in Green Lake, Wallingford, Fremont, and Phinney Ridge. The boundaries are N and NW 85th St to the north, the Lake Washington Ship Canal to the south, I-5 to the east, and 8th Ave NW to the west. Games take place at Green Lake Park and Wallingford Park.

Big rise in Parks Department field fees

Fees to use Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation fields dramatically increased on Jan. 1, 2011. “As a result of strained budgets,” Joelle Hammerstad, a Parks and Recreation Public Information Officer told me, ”[Seattle City] Council decided to take some additional steps on charging for the use of ballfields.” Fees for both adults and youth have gone up. Youth practice time, for example, used to be just $2.50/hour during the regularly established season. The cost is now $6/hour.
