Green Lake was lit up last night (Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011).

Several hundred people participated in the Fremont Arts Council‘s 11th annual Luminata. The lantern parade celebrated the Autumnal Equinox.

Fremont Arts Council to bring Luminata lantern parade to Green Lake this Thursday

Luminata, a lantern parade to celebrate the Autumnal Equinox, is returning to Green Lake Park this Thursday evening (Sept. 22, 2011).

The event, which is in its 11th year, comes our way via the Fremont Arts Council.

All are invited to participate, “no matter your age or your zip code.” Attendees should bring a lantern.

The parade will start at the Green Lake Small Craft Center, located at the southwest corner of Green Lake, at dusk (around 7 p.m.). It ends with a “special secret banquet where the Prince of Summer presides and there is music and dancing, cider, cookies and treats for everyone.”

Participants carry lanterns or blinky lights and toys. Illuminated sculptures also float on the lake.

“The Fall equinox is a wonderful time for celebrating the change of seasons ” says last year’s Luminata lead artist Leslie Zenz on the event’s yahoo group page. “Many traditions around the world recognize the last days of the productive summer are about to shift into the dark, introspective time of winter. Lanterns are a beautiful symbol of our spirit as a community that will sustain us through the cold months.”

According to a Facebook event page, The Fremont Arts Council is holding open studio hours to prepare for the parade today (Sunday, Sept. 18), 12 – 6 p.m. and Monday and Tuesday, 6-9 p.m., at the Power House (3940 Fremont Ave N).

2010 Luminata lantern parade at Green Lake Park this Tuesday

Luminata, an “Autumnal Equinox Lantern Parade,” is returning to Green Lake Park this Tuesday (Sept 21, 2010) at 7 p.m.

The event, which is in its 10th year, comes our way via the Fremont Arts Council.

The fall equinox is a wonderful time for celebrating the change of seasons. Many traditions around the world recognize the last days of the productive summer are about to shift into the dark and introspective time of winter. Lanterns are a beautiful symbol of our spirit as a community that will sustain us through the cold months.

This year, the Prince of Summer is giving a banquet in honor of King Winter, who will be joining us by boat across the lake.

Participants in the lantern parade, the “court of the Prince,” will start at the Green Lake Small Craft Center, located at the southwest corner of Green Lake, at dusk (around 7 p.m.).

The parade will then promenade to the “Secret Banquet,” near the Bathhouse Theater on the west side of the lake, at 7312 West Green Lake Dr N. Refreshments, hot cider, and treats will be available at the Secret Banquet. Ricky Gene Powell and Bando Rio will be making music.

All are invited to participate in Luminata, “no matter your age or your zip code.” Participants are asked to bring a handmade or store-bought lantern.

Penguin Auction Tonight in Greenwood

It’s not that we’re encouraging you to flee our crime-ridden-of-late neighborhood for safer places, it’s just that we’re not snubbing the penguins anymore. So check your bank balance, pack up the kids and dogs, and head over to Greenwood at 6 p.m. and you might just be heading home with an extra passenger (like Blue Juan by Seattle urban artist John Osgood of Bherd Studios).

Here’s the nitty gritty:

Woodland Park Zoo invites Seattle area residents to the new Greenwood development Piper Village for the final Penguins on the March silent auction on Friday, September 11th, between 6 - 9pm, during the monthly Art Up Greenwood-Phinney art walk. During the auction, Piper Village will also celebrate the grand opening of Mud Bay Granary and invites Seattle residents to bring their families and their furry-friends along for the fun.

Piper Village will host a festival-like event during the silent auction and art walk designed to bring this Seattle community together on this historic day in honor of family, laughter, animals and local art. Activities will be tailored to adults, children and man’s best friend–dogs. The evening will include:

Crafts for kids provided by Top Ten Toys (FREE)

Taproot Theatre Improv team performance at 7:30pm (FREE)

Dog-friendly activities and goodies provided by Mud Bay Granary (FREE)

Music and refreshments provided by Piper Village (FREE)

Humboldt penguin-themed fun provided by Woodland Park Zoo (FREE)

Face painting station by Colorific Kids ($4-$15)

Silent Auction and Festival will be located on Morrow Lane
Morrow Lane, is just off 85th street, behind, Bartell and Blockbuster, between Palatine and 1st Ave NW. The Lane will be closed to vehicles for this event. Street parking accessible on Palatine or 1st Ave NW from 85th Street.

25 local artist-decorated penguins (many artists present)

Guests can purchase a penguin – take it home same evening

Cash, check and credit card will be accepted for all silent auction purchases

Minimum bids range between $50 and $125

Guaranteed bid set at $375 or a premium guaranteed bid at $1000 (includes personalized ornamental anchovy to be embedded in Woodland Park Zoo’s new west entry, opening in 2010.)

Auction bonus: Personalized ornamental anchovy
Generous auction winners who bid a minimum of $1,000 for wildlife conservation will also receive their name (or that of a family, friend or loved one) etched onto an ornamental anchovy, inspired by the favorite food of the Humboldt penguin. These etched anchovies will be embedded into a shoal of schooling fish at the new west entry plaza near the penguin exhibit sometime in 2010.

Hey, Where's Our Penguin?

We went to the zoo today and learned about Penguins on the March, a Seattle neighborhood art exhibit:

This summer, sixty-two Seattle artists of all ages and experience levels painted, embellished and decorated 22″ fabricated penguins as a community celebration of art and wildlife conservation, inspired by Woodland Park Zoo’s brand new Humboldt penguin exhibit, which opened in May.

Penguins on the March will begin migrating into Ballard, Fremont and Greenwood-Phinney, where you will find individual penguins prominently featured in front of neighborhood businesses in July, August and September.

As you can see from the map, though Wallingford isn’t mentioned, they get a penguin, too. So everyone nearby but us. What’s the deal? It’s because we’re not considered cultured enough, isn’t it? We’re just a destination: drive on over, jog around our lake, grab your Starbucks Double Tall Soy No Whip No Sprinkles 1 Pump Peppermint 1 Pump Mocha, laugh at our hole that should be a grocery store, and turn up your nose at Circa as you drive back home. What about our Bathhouse Theater? Do we need to change the spelling to theatre to get noticed? What about our guerilla knitter? And where are you going to go if you need something gilded? Right here in Green Lake.

This is bigger than a couple of penguins; this is our neighborhood identity! We don’t have more to say on the matter at the moment, but rest assured it’ll be an ongoing theme.
