KapKa, a cooperative K-5 school located just south of the Woodland Park Zoo (510 N 49th St), is holding an open house on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, 2-4 p.m.

Our school is on south end of Green Lake, near the Woodland Park Zoo south entrance and many of our current students (and alums) reside in the Green Lake neighborhood.

This is the time of year when many neighborhood families will be exploring elementary schools, hoping to find just the right fit for their child. For more than 20 years, KapKa, a cooperative K-5 school, has offered an excellent progressive elementary education in our neighborhood with inspiring teachers and small class sizes.

At KapKa, we believe in educating the whole child; taking care to support each child’s academic, social and emotional growth. KapKa provides an experience-centered, integrated curriculum. With strong involvement and support of our parents, passionate teachers and staff, our students are challenged to develop the academic and social skills necessary to be inquisitive, thoughtful, caring and contributing members of our community.

This fall, KapKa moved three blocks from our eleven-year home at the “Little Red Schoolhouse” on Linden Avenue to our current location within the Emmanuel Bible Church complex near Woodland Park. Doubling our previous square footage, we now have more classroom space, a larger library, larger mixed-use space for music and art, an outdoor play yard as well as a full-size indoor gym.

We welcome you to learn more about KapKa at our January Open House on Saturday, January 28 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Come meet our teaching team and staff and tour our facility (Parents only please—your child will have an opportunity to visit KapKa at a later time).

The Seattle Public Theater (SPT) at the Green Lake Bathhouse (7312 West Green Lake Dr N) is unveiling new seats at an open house on Sunday, October 9, 2011, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

Open house visitors are invited to “party like it’s 1927,” the year the Green Lake Bathhouse was built:

In 1927 the world was hopping! Jazz, flappers and speakeasies were in, Charles Lindberg made the first solo transatlantic flight, and the Bathhouse at Green Lake was built.

Later, the Bathhouse was transformed to a theater using circa 1924 seats from the former Phinney Ridge Theater. Over the years the seats became extremely worn and sagging. Seattle Public Theater decided our grand old home deserved better. We launched a Seat Naming Campaign to raise the dough to buy new seats – which have recently been installed.

Be hip to the jive – swing by our joint and party with us – 1927 style – with tunes, free food and beverages, door prizes and a raffle to win a seat naming. Raffle Tickets on sale at event only. All ages welcome.

A new Green Lake dentistry practice opened its doors on Thursday, May 26, 2011 on the third floor of the Lakeside Plaza building (7900 East Green Lake Drive N, Suite 300).

The dentist office, which is headed up by Dr. Kevin Biederman, is open Tuesdays through Thursdays and alternating Mondays and Fridays.

“Our office is state of the art in digital technology. We are a paperless office,” says dental assistant Heather Horst. “We cater especially to those with dental fears and make it a point to make every visit easy and comfortable.”

Biederman Dentistry will be hosting an open house and free barbecue on Thursday, June 30, 2011, 4-7 p.m.

John Marshall School building

A new preschool is opening soon in the old John Marshall High School building (520 NE Ravenna Blvd).

Cindy and Jared Vandegrift are opening Little Explorers School in the building’s former faculty room on the ground floor. The space will be comprised of one main room, two small rooms and a bathroom.

The Little Explorers Preschool Program will be offered Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., beginning September 2011.

There will be three enrollment options: five days per week (Monday – Friday), three days per week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday), and two days per week (Tuesday and Thursday).

The philosophy of Little Explorers is based on integrating art with science while engaging and enriching children through exploration. Our ability to engage children using positive reinforcement and tons of encouragement fosters the opportunity to learn and make new discoveries. Little Explorers seeks to honor each child as an individual and celebrate their creative and unique learning styles. We believe in hands on learning, making connections and discoveries while exploring new concepts. It is our mission at Little Explorers to give children the courage and self confidence to become enlightened, empowered and empathetic individuals.

A Little Explorers Sports Club will also be offered beginning in September. The Sports Club is an afternoon program for children ages 3 to 5 years old.

This summer, the school is offering Little Explorers Enrichment Camps at Ravenna Park and Little Howe Park, as well as a Morning Explorers Camp at the school’s new Green Lake location.

There will be an open house at the school on Friday, June 3, 2011, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Parents are encouraged to bring their children. Applications will be accepted on-site.

It should probably be mentioned that, while John Marshall School closed in 2008, SPS is now renting out the building to various groups including Northwest Girls Choirs, a German preschool and school and other school-like organizations. I hope they are considering their tenants (and collecting their input!) when proposing to make part of the parking lot a temporary fire station.
