Please join us and other Seattle online media at a benefit for Northwest Harvest on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011, 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Pies and Pints (1215 NE 65th St).

The event, organized by The SunBreak, is the fourth annual Blogsgiving. It is hosted by Roosiehood, Ravenna Blog, Wallyhood, My Green Lake and The SunBreak.

A suggested minimum donation of $5 to Northwest Harvest and/or two non-perishable food items will earn you one specialty drink, such as a Guinness with cider float.

Non-alcoholic beverages will also be available, as well as markers and paper for kids of all ages to make hand turkeys.

“All bloggers, readers, friends, enemies, and even frenemies are invited to attend,” Audrey Hendrickson of The SunBreak writes. “Blogsgiving is not just for hyperlocal newsies, but for anyone who might want to share a warm, social evening with people they know mainly through handles like @dawgs4ev. Come one, come all!”

My Green Lake will be featured on Linda Thomas’ show “The News Chick” tomorrow morning (Saturday, Sept. 30, 2011). The show airs at 8 a.m. on 97.3 KIRO FM.

The contest is held annually by Region 10 of SPJ to honor exceptional journalism in the Pacific Northwest. It includes all forms of media – print, online, radio and TV.

Your neighborhood site — powered by your contributions, tips, photos, comments and feedback — won third place awards in the “Best New Site” category and in the “Best Online Community Engagement” category.

The “Best New Site” category was open to media websites in Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana that launched in 2009. First place went to Guerilla Candy and second place was awarded to the Bozeman Daily Chronicle.

The “Best Online Community Engagement” award reflects a news organization’s interaction with the community both on its homepage and elsewhere online. First place went to our friends at West Seattle Blog and second place went to KING 5.

The Online Community Engagement award truly belongs to everyone in the Green Lake community who has participated in the comments and forum on mygreenlake.com, on our facebook page, on twitter, through our flickr group, and on foursquare. Thank you for your support over the last year and a half!  We’ve had a great time getting to know you.

Those of us who have been with us a for awhile have probably noticed an evolution since we first launched in May 2009.  We’ve learned a lot, and that is in large part due to your feedback and participation here on the site, over facebook, on twitter, and in person.  Thank you for your suggestions and advice – we always appreciate hearing from you.

We’ve got some exciting news!

Thanks to Liz over at CMD+SHIFT Design, you will soon see a new and improved mygreenlake.com.

The site should move faster, look cleaner, and generally be easier to navigate.

Once the new site is up, I’ll run through all of the changes with you, but for now I’ll share a few things that I am really excited about:

1)  We’re adding a timeline that will make it easier to find stories about the history of our neighborhood.

2)  You will be able to filter stories by location – north Green Lake, south Green Lake, west Green Lake, east Green Lake, and Tangletown.

3)  The page layout will be much more readable and less cluttered.

So…stay tuned, and please don’t be alarmed if things look a little different around here in a few days.  :)
