All welcome at Freeway Estates Community Orchard work party

A team of east Green Lake neighbors who are developing an orchard on a strip of public land are holding a community work party. All are welcome to join in and lend a hand at the Freeway Estates Community Orchard on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 9 a.m. If it rains, the event will be rescheduled to Sunday April 17, 1 p.m. Projects include clipping blackberries, filling holes with cut grass, clearing a native rose patch, and planting native wildflower seeds. Frustration over truck parked in east Green Lake leads to complaints to SPD

A truck which has been parked adjacent to the I-5 overpass in east Green Lake is a source of growing frustration to nearby residents, according to one resident who wishes to remain anonymous. The pickup truck, which is filled with plastic bags and empty plastic containers, has been parked next to the freeway’s overpass for at least three months. “Aside from it being a total eye sore,” the resident told us, “there can be between two and five camper vehicles in the area at the same time, and I don’t want to see the area turn into a transient hub.”…

High-speed police chase ends in crash on southbound I-5, north of Green Lake

Updated 2:55 p.m. Hearing helicopters? At 11:45 a.m. today (Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011), WSDOT reported that a collision was blocking all lanes of southbound I-5 at Lake City Way. By 12:05, the left lane was open to traffic, but WSDOT advised that “drivers should still use alternates like I-405 and SR 99.” At 12:30, the seattepi.com’s Casey McNerthney tweeted “if you’re trying to get on southbound I-5, sneak on the 65th onramp,” and WSDOT said that traffic was backed up nearly 3 miles to NE 130th. New community orchard being developed adjacent to I-5

A team of 16 Green Lake households is developing a community orchard on a strip of public land. The 12,000 square foot property, newly named the Freeway Estates Community Orchard, is managed by SDOT.  It is located on the west side of I-5, near NE 60th St.   In the fall of 2010, SDOT granted permission to the Green Lake group to use the land to grow food. Art project proposed for I-5 support wall near Park & Ride

Recently, we received a heads-up from Sarah Schacht about a proposed neighborhood art installation, described by her as a “web 2.0 art project.” The site of the proposed project is an I-5 support wall on 8th Ave NE, between NE 66th St and NE 68th St. Sarah writes: Despite some greenery nicely maintained by WSDOT (Washington State Department of Transportation), the wall, and its surrounding small strip of land, attract transients, crime, and gang graffiti.
