Community invited to Spring Clean event at Green Lake Elementary School

Green Lake Elementary School (2400 N 65th St) will be hosting their annual Spring Clean at the school’s Olallie Native Garden on Saturday, May 12, 2012, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The community is invited to take part in the event, which will take place rain or shine. Attendees are asked to bring, if possible, gloves, a water bottle, shovels and garden tools. Two large metal sculptures created by local artist Tom Flood recently were installed at the garden. The sculptures are representations of Native American berry picking baskets. The installation of the sculptures marks the end of a two-year project funded in part by a Neighborhood Matching…

Green Lake Elementary School students make dresses for Ugandan orphans

Students at Green Lake Elementary School (2400 N 65th St) recently made dresses for orphaned Ugandan girls. The project was headed up by Kate Sipe, the school’s PE and Swimming Teacher. When Ms. Sipe’s mother passed away, she left a large collection of fabric. The dresses were made from the fabric in her honor. Trina Gadsden, Executive Director of Sister Schools, distributed the dresses to girls at an orphanage in Kampala, Uganda. “When the girls put [the dresses] on, their faces and sparkle in their eyes could light the sky, they were so happy,” Gadsden writes. Green Lake Elementary School presents ‘The Wizard of Oz’

Students from Green Lake Elementary School‘s Drama Club are putting on a production of The Wizard of Oz on Thursday, April 5, 2012 at 7 p.m., Friday, April 6 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, April 7 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The play will be in the Lincoln High School Auditorium (4400 Interlake Ave N). Tickets are by donation at the door and payment can be made with cash or check. Court upholds Green Lake Elementary School teachers’ suspensions

Cynthia Wise of KING 5 News reports that the Washington State Court of Appeals today upheld the suspensions of two Seattle School District teachers who, three years ago, refused to give their students the now-defunct Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) exam. Juli Griffith and Lenora Quarto were special education teachers at Green Lake Elementary (2400 N 65th St) in 2008. Griffith still teaches at Green Lake Elementary. Quarter is no longer employed by Seattle Schools. Griffith and Quarto were both suspended for ten days for refusing to attend training in how to administer the test and for refusing to give it, KING 5 News reports. The two…
