The Green Lake Gobble & Mashed Potato Munch Off is returning to Green Lake Park on Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011. More than 1,800 people are expected to attend. The event begins at 9:10 a.m. with a free Kids Dash, followed by a 5K run/walk at 9:30 a.m. The race course can be viewed here. Runners will have the opportunity to “Burn the Turkeys” by racing against one male and one female running the event in turkey costumes. Earlier today (Tuesday, August 16, 2011), we received an update from the Seattle Department of Transportation on Green Lake’s participation in the Walk Bike Ride (WBR) Challenge Neighborhood competition. The WBR Challenge is an effort to encourage people to walk, bike or ride public transit more often to get active and connect with the community. Walk Bike Ride Challenge encourages fewer car trips with prizes and a neighborhood competition
Seattle’s Department of Transportation (SDOT) is holding a Walk Bike Ride (WBR) Challenge this summer. The WBR Challenge is an effort to encourage people to walk, bike or ride public transit more often to get active and connect with the community. After signing up for the WBR Challenge, participants receive weekly emails with tips on walking, biking and riding. Green Lake band ‘Hotels’ progresses in national Battle of the Bands contest
Last month, we told you about the Green-Lake-based band Hotels. The band is now a finalist in Billboard.com’s Battle of the Bands contest. In May, the band will travel to Las Vegas for a final competition, featuring a panel of judges led by Sugar Ray frontman Mark McGrath. The final winner will then perform live on the Billboard Music Awards.

New Wave / post-punk / surf band Hotels is one of three northwest semifinalists in Billboard.com’s Battle of the Bands contest, a nation-wide search for an unsigned band which will perform live at the Billboard Music Awards. Two of the four members of Hotels live in the Green Lake neighborhood. Frontman Blake Madden is located in east Green Lake, and the band’s drummer lives just north of the lake. “One of our northwest competitors, Grynch, calls himself the King of Ballard,” Blake tells us. “Well, we are royal residents of the Lake.” Billboard.com is now accepting online Battle of the Bands votes….
