Earlier this evening (Tuesday, July 5, 2011), KING 5 aired a segment about a man who stood guard over an injured Great Blue Heron last night and this morning at Green Lake Park. Mike Murphy was walking around Green Lake when he noticed a ball of fishing line wrapped around the bird’s leg. “He and other good Samaritans called every agency they could think of until William Miller of Sarvey Wildlife Center showed up with a blanket, a knife and a small pet kennel,” KING 5 reports. “Moments later, Miller had the frightened bird safely on its way to a veterinarian.” Here is…

Duck settles in at Green Lake Elementary School – UPDATED with photos of the ducklings walking to Green Lake
Students at Green Lake Elementary School (2400 N 65th St) have been playing host to a duck who has made a nest right in front of the school’s office door. The duck has been sitting on her nest for two weeks. “We have cones up and a string around the area with a kid-made sign warning passers by not to disturb her,” says Angela Blemker, Kindergarten teacher. “We all feel pretty lucky she chose us as a safe haven, though I don’t really know what she was thinking. The kids don’t exactly walk gingerly in or out of the building each…
Sunday Photo: Canada Geese “bombers” at Green Lake Park
On Sundays, we feature a great shot of our park or neighborhood from the MyGreenLake Flickr Pool. This week’s photo, by Joe Owens, was taken on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at Green Lake Park. Joe added the following caption to his photo: Ive never seen people being trained how to fish before, its pretty cool looking at all these mid fourty year olds swishing the most ephemeral whips in such a graceful manner around them selves like a ballerina thrashing in the wind. and then two huge B52 Canadian Squadron Long range Geese bombers come in for an emergency landing and its panic…
Hello spring! Baby ducks hatch in Green Lake yard
Many thanks to Nancy Johnson for sharing the following photos, which truly herald spring in Green Lake. On Tuesday (April 26, 2011), ten ducklings hatched in Nancy’s west Green Lake yard: Ducks regularly travel across Aurora Ave N from Green Lake to nest in Nancy’s yard. Last fall up to sixteen ducks were in her yard at one time, and there are eight regular visitors who make the trip every day. ”They want bird seed,” she says, “and will tap on our back door to remind us to put some out for them if we haven’t put it out already.” Update, May 7:…
Northern Flickers seen in Green Lake
Max and Melissa, who live a few blocks from the southeast corner of Green Lake in Tangletown, wrote to us today (Friday, March 25, 2011) with some news about local birds. “Every year around this time,” Max says, “we see Northern Flickers in the neighborhood, attempting to peck holes in siding and picking bugs from cracks in the sidewalk. Flickers are slightly smaller woodpeckers without the characteristic red head. They are both striped and spotted, and have very colorful bodies.” More about Northern Flickers, including an audio clip of their voice, can be found at All About Birds. Melissa took the above photo…
