Kerrie Stoops, Assistant Aquatic Center Coordinator at Evans Pool (7201 E Green Lake Dr N), asked us to share news about two upcoming events at the pool:

Neighborhood Appreciation and Sweetheart Potluck at Evans Pool
Saturday February 11^th noon-2:30pm
Bring a dish to share at this free event!  Live music, family fun, friends, and food!  Everyone welcome.

Date Night at Evans Pool
Tuesday February 14^th 6-10pm
Children 6-13 years old are invited to join us for activities, playing SKWIM, watching a movie, and enjoying a snack while parents have a night out.
$25/child – registration can be done online, over the phone (206-684-4961) or in person.
Note:  Please pack suit and towel.  We are only serving snacks during this program.  Child should eat dinner prior to being dropped off.

Women on Wheels (W.O.W.) is returning to Gregg’s Greenlake Cycle (7007 Woodlawn Ave NE) on Thursday, March 1, 2012, 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.

W.O.W. is a celebration of women and cycling. Entry, food, drinks and raffles are all free.

Tracey Gramenz will be the keynote speaker.

Tracey is the founder of Raw Retreats and a well versed bicycle guide.

Tracey has spent the good portion of the past ten years on the saddle.  After retiring early from work as a bilingual family therapist, she hit the road and started professionally guiding luxury bike tours in America’s west (think Zion, Banff, Glacier, Crater Lake, San Juan Islands).  When not guiding others, she has spent her fare share of nights in the tent during extensive, self supported bike tours through Portugal, India, Italy and New Zealand.

The M.C. will be Kat Sweet, the Youth Program Coordinator at Cascade Bicycle Club and the Director for Trips for Kids Seattle.

The Seattle Public Theater (SPT) at the Green Lake Bathhouse (7312 West Green Lake Dr N) invites you to a production of the Tony Award-winning comedy Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, by Tom Stoppard. Performances are scheduled for January 27- February 19, 2012. Show times are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 7:30 p.m. and Sundays, 2 p.m.

Zany humor, quicksilver wordplay, gripping tension and a heady swirl of ideas all come together in this story of two minor characters from Hamlet in search of their role in life. This top-notch revival of Stoppard’s 1966 hit, not seen in Seattle for a long time, has its own unique twist by featuring women in the key roles. Directed by SPT’s Artistic and Education Director, Shana Bestock,  Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead stars Angela DiMarco as Rosencrantz, Alyssa Keene as Guildenstern and Heather Hawkins as The Player.  They are joined by Patrick Lennon, Kenna Kettrick, Julie Jamieson, John Murray, Duncan Weinland, Ray Gonzalez, Jessa Lowe and Matthew Aguayo. Come for Shakespeare, stay for Stoppard!  For those who would like to see the show Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is based upon, SPT’s Youth Ensemble is performing William Shakespeare’s Hamlet in repertory, February 4th-12th. Youth shows are always free with donations gladly accepted.

Green Lake’s eXit SPACE School of Dance (414 NE 72nd St) is hosting a launch party for new business book Steps on Friday, Feb. 3, 2012 at 7 p.m. The event will include a free ballet class and a reading from the book by author Patricia Vaccarino.

Manny Frishberg describes Steps this way:

The title of Patricia Vaccarino’s new book Steps is a mixed metaphor. There are the stair steps up in her grandmother’s house, which she mastered decades ago; there are the steps of a ballet class – the central metaphor of the book. Also, the steps of growing a business and a brand – the subject of the book. “Steps” is more than a business manual; it is part memoir, part meditation on the inner world of the ballet class, part exhortation to excellence: a pean to stretching beyond one’s reach.

Revenue from the event’s book sales will be donated to the Seattle Dance Project.

The Lifetime Learning Center is located in the John Marshall High School building (520 NE Ravenna Blvd). The center offers daytime college-level non-credit classes for adults of all ages. Classes are taught by a faculty of retired educators and volunteer instructors.

Class offerings include: Shakespeare’s Macbeth; Howard Hawks Film Review; Ancient Near East History; Mann’s The Magic Mountain; A Layman’s Introduction to Economics for Voters; and 20th Century History.

Tuition for an eight week course is typically $30. Weekly classes are offered Monday through Thursday.

There will be an open house on Thursday, Jan. 5, 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Attendees will be able to meet instructors, see the facility, and hear a presentation of the instructors’ overviews of their upcoming classes.

Update, Tuesday, November 8: Both bird walks are now full and reservations are no longer being taken.

The Friends of Green Lake is offering two Green Lake bird walks with Audubon Society Master Birder Martin Muller this fall.

The walks will be on Saturday, November 12, 2011 and Saturday, November 19, 2011, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.

The four-hour tours of Green Lake Park will cover migrants as well as local birds, including waterfowl and shorebirds. Beginners and advanced birders of all ages are welcome. Dogs, however, should stay home.

The group will walk slowly and will practice being quiet so that they can hear the birds before the birds hear the group.

Participants should wear three or four layers, including a water-repellent or waterproof outer layer if there is rain in the forecast. Field guides, binoculars and scopes are also helpful.

We are an illy caffe certified “artists of flavor” coffee shop, and as part of that program we have European coffee and tea specialties that are very unique and delicious (next to our famous gelato, panini and salads). In order to have people taste these unusual creations, we host a weekend of ”complementary giveaway” every time we change the menu. We have created several special items for this Holiday season, and would like people to taste them!

Directed by Artistic and Education Director, Shana Bestock, Anon(ymous) features the work of Adam Shulda-Maui, Alex Helme, Anna Marie Yanny, Audrey Delaney-Hanna, Denny Le, Ella Conte, Leo Campbell-Klein, Nicolas Reide-Walton, Nicole Armstrong, Sara Albertson, Spencer Bradley, Blair Feehan, Sophie Von Veh, Tessa Garcia-Duarte, Lauren Brackenbury, Michael Chinn, Andrew Marques, Emily Fassler, Erica Hansen, and Percy Boyle.

“Separated from his mother, a young refugee called Anon journeys through the United States, encountering a wide variety of people — some kind, some dangerous and cruel — as he searches for his family,” reads a press release from SPT. “From a sinister one-eyed butcher to beguiling barflies to a sweatshop, Anon must navigate through a chaotic, ever-changing landscape in this entrancing adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey. As abundant, funny, anguished and hopeful as America itself, Anon(ymous) offers a rich and witty exploration of how we all search for home and identity.”

The audience is invited to join the cast after each performance for panel discussions about the issues and themes of the play. Special guests include refugee students from North Seattle Community College sharing their poems of identity on Sunday, November 6, and members of Peace on the Streets by Kids from the Streets on Saturday, November 12.

On Saturday, November 5, there will be a post-play discussion with New Horizons Ministries, a group leading the movement to break the cycle of youth homelessness.

In addition to the post-play discussions, the SPT board has sponsored an essay contest for all ages. More info is available at seattlepublictheater.org.

The Seattle Public Theater youth ensemble will be holding a sock drive October 31-November 12. Socks may be dropped off during the show or anytime during normal box office hours.
