Green Lake Elementary School students make dresses for Ugandan orphans

Students at Green Lake Elementary School (2400 N 65th St) recently made dresses for orphaned Ugandan girls. The project was headed up by Kate Sipe, the school’s PE and Swimming Teacher. When Ms. Sipe’s mother passed away, she left a large collection of fabric. The dresses were made from the fabric in her honor. Trina Gadsden, Executive Director of Sister Schools, distributed the dresses to girls at an orphanage in Kampala, Uganda. “When the girls put [the dresses] on, their faces and sparkle in their eyes could light the sky, they were so happy,” Gadsden writes. Spring classes at The Center at St. Andrew’s: ‘West African Rhythm, Song & Dance’ and ‘Transformational Mask Making’

The Center at St. Andrew’s (111 NE 80th St) is offering two classes this spring, April 18-May 16, 2012. All are welcome. New programs at Green Lake Community Center: Youth Holiday Pottery and Pee Wee Sports

Carl Bergquist, Green Lake Community Center Assistant Coordinator, asked us to help spread the word about some new programs at the community center (7201 E Green Lake Dr N): We have added a second Youth with Parent (family) Holiday Pottery Class in December. This is a two session class that is designed for kids aged 7-12 to make a holiday family piece to share during the holidays and will include a firing and a glazing. Artist Karl Johnson creating hand-cut silhouettes at Mockingbird Books

Silhouette artist Karl Johnson will be creating hand-cut original silhouettes at Mockingbird Books (7220 Woodlawn Ave NE) on Sunday, November 13, 2011, 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. An original silhouette will be $25. Duplicates and frames will be available. Karl is a third generation silhouette artist. According to a flier for the event, his work has appeared in over 30 national publications including “The O List” in O Magazine, People, In Style, Martha Stewart Wedding, Parents, Elegant Bride, Nickelodeon, People, Country Home, Country Living and many others.
