Seattle Parks and Recreation has shut off the lights at Green Lake’s outdoor tennis courts until the return to Daylight Savings Time on March 11, 2012. The lights, along with those at several other outdoor tennis courts in Seattle, were shut off in an effort to create energy savings during the winter months when few people play outside. Parks estimates the savings from turning off tennis court lights across the city to be about $15,000. Parks Department seeks donations to swim lesson scholarship fund
Seattle Parks and Recreation is accepting donations large and small for the Learn to Swim Scholarship Fund. “Providing swimming lessons for children is our highest priority,” said Kathy Whitman, Parks Aquatics Manager, in a press release. “We have reduced our fees by 50% for those who qualify. We want to provide affordable swim lessons for all children, especially those who meet low income guidelines, but even 50% of the fee is still too expensive for many families.” This year, Parks has been especially challenged by the depletion in the scholarship budget caused by City budget reductions. 1,500+ runners expected at Green Lake Park this Sunday
More than 1,500 runners are expected at Green Lake Park this Sunday (Nov. 20, 2011) for the Green Lake Gobble & Mashed Potato Munch Off. The event begins at 9:10 a.m. with a free Kids Dash, followed by a 5K run/walk at 9:30 a.m. The race course can be viewed here. Runners will have the opportunity to “Burn the Turkeys” by racing against one male and one female running the event in turkey costumes. The King County Council has named State Representative David Frockt to fill the seat of State Senator Scott White. Sen. White died on October 21. Frockt will represent Washington State’s 46th District. The district covers much of north Seattle, including north Green Lake.
