Volunteers needed to remove weeds at Green Lake Park

The Friends of Green Lake are holding a Green Lake work party on Saturday, November 5, 2011, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., rain or shine. Participants will weed a restoration site on the Green Lake shoreline, just north of the the Green Lake Pitch & Putt golf course (5701 East Green Lake Way N). Blackberry roots and other weeds need to be removed. Volunteers should dress for the weather. Hiking boots and thick gloves are recommended. If you have weeding tools, you are asked to bring them. Green Lake homeless shelter may reopen

The homeless shelter at Bethany Lutheran Church (7400 Woodlawn Ave NE) may reopen soon. The shelter closed on Monday, October 10, 2011 after more than a year at the Green Lake church. Although there was some community resistance about the shelter preceding its opening, there has not been an organized public outcry since then. In January 2011, a resident of the shelter interrupted an attempted burglary at the church. The Green Lake shelter is a part of Seattle Housing and Resource Effort (SHARE). SHARE closed all 15 of its neighborhood indoor shelters earlier this month due to insufficient funding. Crime notes from around the neighborhood: “Mental complaint” at Chocolati, car prowls on N 76th, burglaries on N 54th

According to My Green Lake reader Ariane, four police cars were stopped with lights flashing near the Green Lake Chocolati (7810 E Green Lake Dr N) last night (Monday, October 17, 2011) around 7:30 p.m. Ariane reports that a staff member at Chocolati said that a man was apprehended by police after he ran into the cafe, grabbed some cream and sugar, and then ran out. I called Chocolati owner Christian Wong to confirm the incident, but his voicemail indicates that he is unavailable for several days. Police reports do indicate that SPD officers were dispatched last night to E Green Lake Dr N at Stroud…

McDonald School’s Move-a-Thon is this Friday

McDonald Elementary School is preparing for their biggest annual fundraiser. On Friday, October 21, 2011 McDonald students will participate in the school’s second annual Move-a-Thon. The children – most in kindergarten or first grade – will walk or run laps at Wallingford Playfield to raise money for the school, while parents, friends, and neighbors cheer them on. This year, the Mariner Moose will also be on hand. “This is our budding new school’s major fall fundraiser. We hope to be able to fund programs that will greatly enhance our children’s scholastic experience,” said Move-a-Thon organizer Jennifer Sill-Reichert in a press release…

Green Lake Community Center Family Fun Nights planned for Oct. 21 and Dec. 16

Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Green Lake Advisory Council are presenting Family Fun Nights on Friday, October 21 and Friday, December 16, 2011, 5 p.m. – 8 p.m., at the Green Lake Community Center (7201 E Green Lake Dr N).
