Updated Monday, August 29 with information about Sports Clips coupons.

Seattle Public Schools (SPS) teachers and staff will be taking a furlough day on Wednesday, August 31, 2011.

The day without pay, along with a half-day without pay in 2012, will help offset the state Legislature’s recent $4-million reduction in funding for SPS salaries.

“While both Seattle Public Schools and [Seattle Education Association] leadership recognize the hardship of taking time off without pay, it is the best way to minimize the impact on classrooms and our students, said Interim Superintendent Dr. Susan Enfield in a press release on August 9.

On Wednesday, August 31, the first of the furlough days, there will be a Teacher Appreciation event from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Mockingbird Books (7220 Woodlawn Ave NE).

Deborah Bonjouklian of FaceTime SkinCare is teaming up with Mockingbird Books to offer the event free of charge to teachers. Deborah will be providing complimentary mini-facials or hand treatments, Eric Wolf Rabinowitz, LMP, RMT will be giving free foot massages, the Roosevelt Square Sports Clips will be giving out coupons for free haircuts for faculty and staff, and the bookstore will offer a special teacher discount.

There will be drawings for various products, including B5 Serum, Self Tanner and Arbonne products, and a drawing for a facial valued at $80.

“I think our public school teachers are getting a raw deal with the recent pay cuts,” Deborah says. “I wanted to do something to show they are appreciated.”
