City money available for neighborhood emergency preparedness

Updated Monday, July 18 with additional information from Lois Maag. Earlier today (Friday, July 15, 2011), the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods announced that the next cycle of the Small and Simple Projects Fund will focus on emergency preparedness. The funding opportunity is being offered by the Department of Neighborhoods in partnership with the Office of Emergency Management. Brighter, more efficient LED streetlights being installed on Green Lake streets

New LED streetlights are being installed on residential streets in the north Seattle area, including Green Lake. This is the second phase of Seattle City Light‘s installation of LED streetlights. Last year, 6,000 were installed between the Ship Canal and North 65th St. City Light is now installing 12,000 more from N 65th St to the northern border of City Light’s service territory [PDF map]. This weekend in Green Lake: Battle at the Lake, Shakespeare in the Park, the Milk Carton Derby and more

The eighth annual Battle at the Lake is this weekend (July 15-17, 2011) at the Green Lake Community Center. The five-on-five outdoor basketball tournament traditionally features Seattle’s finest basketball players [more info]. This weekend also brings free performances of Antony and Cleopatra and The Tempest to Lower Woodland Park [more info] and a free Youth Ensemble production of The Princess Bride to the Seattle Public Theater at the Green Lake Bathhouse [more info]. UPDATE: Great Blue Heron dies after being rescued at Green Lake

We have a sad follow-up to the KING 5 story we shared on July 5, 2011 about a man who stood guard over an injured Great Blue Heron at Green Lake Park until the bird was taken away by a representative from Sarvey Wildlife Center. Jennifer T., one of the good Samaritans who joined Mike Murphy in helping the Great Blue Heron, says that she contacted Sarvey for an update and learned that the bird, which had been tangled in fishing line, has died. Its legs were so severely damaged that it had to be euthanized. Jennifer also learned that Sarvey rescued a duck…

Try out Minimus shoes at Green Lake Park with Molly Mesnick

Reality TV star Molly Mesnick will be at Green Lake Park on Thursday, July 21, 2011, 1-3 p.m. OnlineShoes.com will be hosting the event, which is a promotion for the New Balance Minimus.
