UPDATE: Great Blue Heron dies after being rescued at Green Lake

What do you think? (2 Comments) July 14, 2011 at 5:23PM

We have a sad follow-up to the KING 5 story we shared on July 5, 2011 about a man who stood guard over an injured Great Blue Heron at Green Lake Park until the bird was taken away by a representative from Sarvey Wildlife Center.

Jennifer T., one of the good Samaritans who joined Mike Murphy in helping the Great Blue Heron, says that she contacted Sarvey for an update and learned that the bird, which had been tangled in fishing line, has died. Its legs were so severely damaged that it had to be euthanized.

Jennifer also learned that Sarvey rescued a duck and goose from Green Lake, both of which had been disabled by getting tangled in fishing line.

“Fisherpersons need use a lot more care in the way they go about their fishing,” Jennifer says. “It is so sad that a Great Blue Heron lost its life.”

  1. PaulyD says:

    Well heron today gone tomorrow.

  2. This is very sad news. I saw a mallard with an injured leg a few weeks ago and the culprit, once again, was fishing line wrapped tightly around its leg. It could barely walk on it. I find this so disturbing.
