Updated August 2, 2011 with a statement from Kate Martin. King County is holding an all-mail Primary and Special Election on August 16, 2011. Ballots have now arrived at most Green Lake homes. Green Lake residents will see School Board candidates on their ballots. The top two candidates in the Primary race will be on all Seattle ballots in November. There are four contenders for Seattle School Director for District No. 2, which represents Bagley, B.F. Day, Green Lake, Greenwood, Hamilton International Middle School, McDonald Elementary, Middle College @ Wilson Pacific, Olympic View, Sacajawea, Seattle Evening School, Stanford International School and Whittier. Volunteer at upcoming ‘From Hiroshima to Hope’ ceremony

Volunteers are needed to help with this year’s From Hiroshima to Hope ceremony. From Hiroshima to Hope will be Saturday, August 6, 2011, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., at Green Lake Park. The date will mark the 66th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. The lantern-floating peace ceremony will be held on the northwest shore of Green Lake, just south of the Bathhouse Theatre (7312 West Green Lake Dr N). The event honors the victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and all victims of war and violence. Two Green Lake residents share opinions on Referendum 1 and the Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement

photo credit: IMLS DCC King County is holding an all-mail Primary and Special Election on August 16, 2011. Ballots were mailed yesterday. The ballot includes a question, Referendum 1, which relates to the Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement. Referendum 1 asks Seattle voters to approve or reject Section 6 of Ordinance Number 123542. If approved, Section 6 would authorize the Seattle City Council “to give notice to proceed, beyond preliminary design work, with three agreements concerning the State’s proposal to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct with a deep-bore tunnel.” Section 6 states: The City Council is authorized to decide whether to issue the…

Pedestrian swinging piece of wood on Aurora Ave hits and damages at least two vehicles

A Seattle Police Department report indicates that police received several 9-1-1 calls at approximately 10 p.m. on Sunday night (July 24, 2011) about someone walking on Aurora Ave N, swinging what appeared to be a 2 x 4 or a baseball bat at vehicles. Callers reported seeing the person as far south as the 5500 block of Aurora Ave N and as far north as N 68th St, where he was detained by police.
