Volunteers sought to take water samples after potentially toxic algae spotted in Green Lake

Last Tuesday (June 21, 2011), Green Lake resident Mary Griffin spotted an algae scum in Green Lake’s waters. She snapped the following picture on the east side of the lake, near the Green Lake Community Center:   King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks took a sample of the algae the next day. Sally Abella of King County DNR identified the predominant bacteria as three cyanobacteria species, including Microcystis and Anabaena, both of which can produce toxins.  Preliminary chemical analysis by Washington Department of Ecology was completed Friday afternoon. Coming soon to north Green Lake: Cake Envy

A new cake shop and cafe is coming to Lakeside Plaza (7900 East Green Lake Dr N), across the street from the Green Lake wading pool.     Situated between Trattoria Cioppino and Zeeks Pizza, the 1,800+ square-foot property has stood vacant since May 2009, when Souped Up Cafe went out of business. Helen Noh, who has operated a successful baking company since 2007, has leased the space. Cake Envy will operate as both a bakery and a cafe.   Caffe Umbria coffee and espresso drinks will be available, as well as teas. Helen hopes to offer locally-produced beer and wine in the future. There…

The Greenlake Farmers Market opens for the 2011 season

  The Greenlake Farmers Market, located on the west side of Green Lake at 6501 Aurora Ave N, is now open for the season. It will be open seven days a week until the last pumpkins are sold in the fall. Hours are 10 a.m. through 7 p.m., subject to the weather. Organic “Early Robin” cherries from Yakima are currently available and will be for sale all week. A different cherry variety will be available every week following: Index, Benton, Bings, Rainier, Atticas, Lapins, Regina and Sweethart. Sweet corn will soon be available as well. Green Lake’s Streetwise Gardener: Over on the west side

2011 From Hiroshima to Hope ceremony at Green Lake Park

Updated August 1, 2011 This year’s “From Hiroshima to Hope” ceremony will be Saturday, August 6, 2011, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., at Green Lake Park.  More than 1,000 attendees are expected. The lantern-floating peace ceremony, now in its 26th year at Green Lake, honors the victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and all victims of war and violence.
