This year’s “From Hiroshima to Hope” ceremony will be Saturday, August 6, 2011, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., at Green Lake Park. More than 1,000 attendees are expected.
The lantern-floating peace ceremony, now in its 26th year at Green Lake, honors the victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and all victims of war and violence.
The ceremony will be held on the northwest shore of Green Lake, just south of the Bathhouse Theatre (7312 West Green Lake Dr N).
Pre-event activities begin at 6 p.m. and include lantern calligraphy, folding of peace cranes and a Meditation Space sponsored by the Buddhist Peace Fellowship.
At 7 p.m., a program of musical performances and speakers will commence, beginning with a blessing by Pat John, with Ahousat First Nations. Musical performances will include drumming by Seattle Kokon Taiko, Shakuhachi bamboo flute playing by Peter Hill and Marcia Takamura on Koto. Trevor McMorris Tate, President of the The United Nations Association of Greater Seattle, will give the keynote address. Native youth from Red Eagle Soaring Theater will perform “The Right to Justice.”
Candle-lit lanterns are floated on the lake at dusk, around 9 p.m.
From Hiroshima to Hope is created annually by local peace, faith and community organizations. Sponsors include Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience, Peace Action of Washington, the United Nations Association, WA Chapter, and Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility.
