Groundbreaking was celebrated today (Tuesday, May 10, 2011) at Village Cove (Woodlawn Ave NE and Latona Ave NE).

The Hearthstone, a continuing care retirement community located two blocks away at 6720 E Green Lake Way N, is expanding to the Woodlawn site. The four-story building will contain 28 luxury one- and two-bedroom units on the top three floors, retail spaces on the ground floor, and underground parking.

Hearthstone staff and residents, Board of Trustees members, representatives from Walsh Construction CompanyLRS Architects, and the Washington State Department of Commerce, and members of the Green Lake community joined together to celebrate the construction phase of the new building.

The Hearthstone purchased the property in 2005 and the lot was cleared in 2009.  ”It’s been six long years,” Mary Lou Stuenzi, Chief Executive Officer of The Hearthstone said, before crediting a “great team,” including Board members and the administration and staff of The Hearthstone, with bringing the project to the point it is at today.

“It’s a great day for The Hearthstone, and a great day for the Green Lake community,” Board Chair Mitch Hansen said.

Village Cove is expected to open in fall 2012.

The current phase of the project is being financed in part by the USEPA American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Brownfields Grant and is being done in cooperation with the Washington State Department of Commerce and the Washington State Department of Ecology. Additional assistance has been provided by King County Solid Waste Division.
