Tangletown resident advises neighbors to secure basement windows

What do you think? (4 Comments) April 21, 2011 at 4:27PM

A Tangletown resident says that she believes she interrupted a burglary attempt at her home last night (Wednesday, April 20, 2011), and she wants to warn others to secure their basement windows.

“We walked to the store around 6 p.m.,” she says. “We were gone about 15 minutes, and when we returned I immediately heard something in the basement. The cat and I both perked up, eyes wide. I called out that there was a noise in the basement, and my boyfriend stepped down there but didn’t see anything. We think now that what I heard was the scraping of the window being either opened or closed. Luckily, we don’t believe anyone actually got in.”

The home’s basement window was screwed shut, she says, but the wood was old and the the screw was pushed out. ”There are now multiple screws in that window,” she reports, “and we’re fortifying the rest of the windows today as well.”

According to the resident of the home, the attempted burglary was reported to the Seattle Police Department, who sent four police cars to the scene. We will be able to confirm this via a police report within the next couple of days, and will update this post with any additional information at that time.

Update, Saturday April 23 – A Seattle Police Department report confirms that the North Precinct responded to an attempted forced-entry burglary that took place at a residence in Tangletown on Wednesday, April 20 at approximately 6:30 p.m.

There are a variety of products you can use to harden and fill in rotted wood as well. The finest I’ve found is based right out of Seattle and you can pick up orders from their Northgate offices if you call them.
Their website is rotdoctor.com. There are also some wood hardener and epoxy products at Greenwood Hardware (Greenwood) or Rocklers (Stone Way).

As bad as it may seem, I think it’s absolutely ridiculous that FOUR police cars were sent to this scene. Not like a murder just took place. Jeesh. I think there’s far worse crimes being committed that would have appreciated those 3 other cops.

I just received this note form the resident of the home that was broken into:

“i wanted to respond to the excessiveness of sending 4 officer to the scene. i can certainly see why it seems excessive, and it did to me at first as well. but then i realized that the first 3 were only there to secure the house since when i called to report i’d just found the window open, i couldn’t confirm that no one was in the house. they showed up as a group (no doubt for their own safety) and spent about 5 minutes inside before giving it the “all clear” and moving on. a 4th officer came by a few minutes later to actually look at the scene and take a report. i just didn’t want it to seem like they were being inefficient, because i was actually impressed with how the system worked (not to mention, of course, thankful)! “
