City offers free support to neighborhood cleanup efforts
Spring Clean, the city’s longest-running neighborhood cleanup program, is celebrating its 25th year. The program runs from April through May. Last year, according to a news release from Seattle Public Utilities, more than 20,000 volunteer hours were dedicated to Spring Clean. Spring Clean activities include painting out graffiti, picking up litter and illegally dumped materials, stenciling storm drains, cleaning school yards, removing invasive plants in planting strips and traffic circles, and planting trees. All projects are conducted on public property. The City of Seattle supports volunteers with free bags, gloves, safety vests, and waste disposal. Green Lake’s Lifetime Learning Center: Continuing education for older adults
Green Lake’s Lifetime Learning Center, which offers continuing education for older adults, will be holding an open house on Thursday, March 24, 2011, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Coffee and cookies will be available. The Lifetime Learning Center offers daytime, non-credit college-level courses in a wide range of subjects, from literature, history, and opera appreciation to bridge, yoga, and tai chi (geared to older adults), watercolor, quilting, computer classes, and writing your life story. Fly casting classes at Green Lake Park this Spring
Two organizations are offering fly casting classes this spring at Green Lake Park. All classes will be held at Green Lake’s casting pier. The casting pier, also called the fishing pier, can be found on the northwest shore of Green Lake, just west of the Bathhouse Theater. The Northwest Fly Anglers Intro to Fly Casting class begins Tuesday, April 5, 2011 and runs 8 weeks, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tuition is $40 and fly rods, reels, and lines are provided.
