Max and Melissa, who live a few blocks from the southeast corner of Green Lake in Tangletown, wrote to us today (Friday, March 25, 2011) with some news about local birds.

“Every year around this time,” Max says, “we see Northern Flickers in the neighborhood, attempting to peck holes in siding and picking bugs from cracks in the sidewalk. Flickers are slightly smaller woodpeckers without the characteristic red head. They are both striped and spotted, and have very colorful bodies.” More about Northern Flickers, including an audio clip of their voice, can be found at All About Birds.

Melissa took the above photo of a Northern Flicker earlier today, as well as several others which can be seen on flickr (no pun intended…!).

Thank you, Max and Melissa!

I woke up this morning to see them pecking more holes in the apartment complex next door. I’m glad I don’t live there!

We have seen them for quite a number of years now. We believe they nest in a neighbor’s large tree. They also periodically peck at the siding on another neighbor’s house. I hope they will continue to visit for many years. We’re west of Tangletown.
