In a canoe on Green Lake, circa 1918

What do you think? (6 Comments) March 23, 2011 at 4:25PM

Sunshine is finally here!

To celebrate, we are sharing this never-before-published photograph of a sunny day at Green Lake, circa 1918:

Copyright Nancy Johnson, may not be reproduced without permission. Click to enlarge.

This historical view of of Green Lake comes to us from the personal collection of My Green Lake reader Nancy Johnson.

The photograph was shot from the interior of a canoe on the lake. Homes along the east shore of Green Lake can be seen, as well as N 65th St, heading east from East Green Lake Way N.

If you click on the image to enlarge it, you can see a house with a triangular peak just to the right of the woman in the dark hat. That house, now painted blue, can also be seen in the 2011 photo below:

“The man on the left is my grandpa, Robert Deane Herrick,” Nancy says. “I think the woman to his right is my grandma, Margaret Ramm. I’m not sure about the woman on the right side of the photo but I think it may be my great grandma Nellie Ramm.”

Thank you, Nancy!

I love the canoeing outfits, including the necktie.

My Dad, Robert Deane Herrick, was always very properly dressed! He put on a suit and tie for Sunday breakfast. Bill Herrick (Lincoln 1944)

Yes I remember him always dressing in a suit and tie. What would he think about those of us working from home in our jammies?

The development around the lake during the two decades prior to this photo was quite dramatic. Many of the homes that appear in the background in the historical photo were built in the first decade of the century, and a few along this stretch of road would have been built in the decade before, in the 1890s. The home you identified, AD, was constructed in 1908. Not quite so visible in the picture is the train track that runs along the road and by this time completely around the lake.

These are nice photos. They help bring a long ago era a little more into view. Much has changed.

Thanks, seattler0cks! I can’t take credit for identifying the house, though – that was Nancy.
