Hand-made “ID bracelets” coming soon to the trees of Green Lake

  On Sunday, March 6, 2011, a  local group of plant enthusiasts, led by plant lover Meghan Fuller, will hang 128 hand-made “ID bracelets” on the trees around the walking path at Green Lake Park. Each sign is about 1’ x 1’, made of wood, heart-shaped, and hand-painted and decorated with the Latin and common name of each tree. The “I Heart Trees!” project is meant to inspire and encourage visitors to the park to learn about the world around them. High-speed police chase ends in crash on southbound I-5, north of Green Lake

Updated 2:55 p.m. Hearing helicopters? At 11:45 a.m. today (Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011), WSDOT reported that a collision was blocking all lanes of southbound I-5 at Lake City Way. By 12:05, the left lane was open to traffic, but WSDOT advised that “drivers should still use alternates like I-405 and SR 99.” At 12:30, the seattepi.com’s Casey McNerthney tweeted “if you’re trying to get on southbound I-5, sneak on the 65th onramp,” and WSDOT said that traffic was backed up nearly 3 miles to NE 130th. Volunteers needed to restore blackbird nesting area at Green Lake Park

All are welcome to join the Friends of Green Lake at a habitat restoration work party on Saturday, March 5, 2011, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Volunteers will work together to remove blackberries and plant native bushes at a blackbird nesting site at Green Lake Park. “This small area is a steep bank next to a cat-tail patch where blackbirds nested each year until 2010,” Gayle Garman, President of the Friends of Green Lake, says.
