City turns to the public for help planning the future of community centers

Earlier today (Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011), Seattle City Council posted a news release urging the public to make their voice heard about the future of the city’s community centers. “Throughout last year’s budget process,” the news release reads, “Seattle City Council heard from hundreds of people about the value of programming at their Community Centers. As a result of the concerns voiced, Council passed a Statement of Legislative Intent asking the Department of Parks and Recreation to examine how Community Centers are operated.” There will be a public meeting to discuss how community centers can be run differently on Wednesday, Feb.  2,…

Update: Green Lake Elementary playground now fenced

Last Friday (Jan. 21, 2011), we reported that a student had been hit by a car on Sunnyside Ave N, the street which borders the west side of Green Lake Elementary. The child had been playing unsupervised in the school’s playground after school.  The playground was unfenced, and the student ran into the street during a game of tag. Seattle Public Schools announces community meetings about proposed changes to Student Transportation Plan

Seattle Public Schools (SPS) is proposing changes to its Transportation Plan for the 2011-12 school year, and the community is invited to learn more and provide feedback during an upcoming series of information meetings. The meeting closest to our area will be on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011 from 6:30-8 p.m. at Hamilton International Middle School (1610 N 41st St). A peek inside Tangletown’s new 56th Street Market

The new 56th Street Market opened today (Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011) in the spot formerly occupied by Meridian Market at 2201 N 56th St. The market opened its doors at 11:30 a.m. and, by the time I visited at 2:30 p.m., had already been visited by many curious neighbors. Here’s a look at what is already available in the market.  Coming soon are magazines and newspapers (The New York Times, The Seattle Times, USA TODAY, and The Wall Street Journal), Bob’s Red Mill products, local produce, and Sunrise greeting cards.

Big rise in Parks Department field fees

Fees to use Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation fields dramatically increased on Jan. 1, 2011. “As a result of strained budgets,” Joelle Hammerstad, a Parks and Recreation Public Information Officer told me, ”[Seattle City] Council decided to take some additional steps on charging for the use of ballfields.” Fees for both adults and youth have gone up. Youth practice time, for example, used to be just $2.50/hour during the regularly established season. The cost is now $6/hour.
