What should Tangletown’s 56th St. Market carry?

What do you think? (11 Comments) January 21, 2011 at 10:45AM

This story comes to us from our news partner My Wallingford.  Thank you, Marina!

If you have a comment about what the new 56th Street Market should carry, please leave it here or on My Wallingford’s original post.

We stopped into the 56th Street Market earlier this week to see how Tangletown’s new grocery store was progressing.

Owner PJ Josan told us that he plans to open by the end of the month, and he said, “We would love to hear from neighbors and what they want in their local market.” We’d asked what you’d like to see in the store before (and have passed on the responses to Josan), but here’s another chance to state your preferences now that the market’s opening approaches. (We really miss the Macrina bread that Meridian Market used to carry and let Josan know that.)

Josan told us that he already plans to carry Amy’s brand prepared foods, Smith Bros. dairy, and a limited selection of produce. The market will also sell beer and wine. Store hours are tentatively set for 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

I would love it if there was a good Asian food section. Bulk foods would draw me in.

I shopped at Pickering’s Price-Rite on 56th for candy. Of course, that was about 75 years ago! Bill Herrick

Local is key! The dearth of local options at QFC drives me away from there.
Fabulous (Macrina, etc.) bread is essential (pun intended).
Mama Lil’s jarred peppers and other delicious, unusual bread/cheese accessories
Classicly forgotten ingredients like canned tomatoes, pasta, grains, beans, sour cream, butter, eggs, milk, cooking oil, salsa, …
    And yes, fresh, local produce!
    Local microbrews and wines.

I would love to see hot, fresh, local/organic rotisserie chickens. This is always a weeknight quick dinner option and it would be great to stop by and get a hot cooked chicken!

I’d love to see some great produce for sure and great local baked goods.
All around I think the offerings at the market should be thoughtfully considered. ‘Convenient’ store type goods wouldn’t interest me. I’d like to know I could shop there for real groceries for my dinner.

I’d love decent bagels! Zatz, maybe?

    Good beer, for sure!

    Lactose-free milk. Local produce.

The delicious chocolate croissants that Meridian Market used to carry!

Spanish wine, Belgian beer, Partagas and Maria Guerrero cigars.

A few staples that would draw us to the market: Macrina fresh bread, local organic dairy and eggs, oj, salad greens and fruits and other veggies, NYTimes, selection of local chocolate, local bagels, microbrew beer… yes, this is most of my grocery list. We are excited to have a market again.
