More than a thousand people brave the rain for the Pathway of Lights

What do you think? (1 Comment) December 14, 2010 at 1:22PM

This past weekend, the amount of rain that fell in Green Lake was “close to that of a historical 100-year event,” according to Seattle Public Utilities.

Despite the thorough soaking, the 34th Pathway of Lights at Green Lake Park on Saturday (Dec. 11, 2010) was a success.

Jeff SkinnerGreen Lake Community Center Coordinator, joked that the event should have been renamed  the “Waterway of (some) Lights” and called the turnout of over a thousand people “a testament to the Northwest spirit.”

Over 75 volunteers worked to keep the luminarias lit in the rain, and every musical group arrived and performed as planned.

More than 200 pounds of food was collected at the event.  The food was donated to Northwest Harvest and the Greenwood Food Bank.

“All in all,” Jeff said, “we treated the weather as one big wet kiss from mother nature.”

Ok this might seem like a silly comment, but I attended and walked the whole way around in the rain. The fact that it was the 34th Pathway says to me that they’ve done this 33 times before. Has it never rained before? Seems to me that votive candles in paper bags is a bad idea for the rain. Volunteers were scrambling to re-light every few minutes and the paper bags were a crumbly mess. 33 years ago they could have bought lanterns or something that could hold up in the weather…Still, the music was delightful and the few moments when the candles stayed lit were beautiful!
