Free trees available to Seattle residents this Saturday

Jana Dilley from Seattle’s Office of Sustainability and Environment wrote to let us know that the city is offering free trees to Seattle residents this Saturday (Dec. 18, 2010).  The trees were unclaimed during the Trees for Neighborhoods program. The trees will be available 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the EarthCorps nursery in Magnuson Park, on a first-come, first-served basis.  Find driving directions here. More than a thousand people brave the rain for the Pathway of Lights

This past weekend, the amount of rain that fell in Green Lake was “close to that of a historical 100-year event,” according to Seattle Public Utilities. Despite the thorough soaking, the 34th Pathway of Lights at Green Lake Park on Saturday (Dec. 11, 2010) was a success. Jeff Skinner, Green Lake Community Center Coordinator, joked that the event should have been renamed  the “Waterway of (some) Lights” and called the turnout of over a thousand people “a testament to the Northwest spirit.” Over 75 volunteers worked to keep the luminarias lit in the rain, and every musical group arrived and performed as planned….

Thieves strike in east Green Lake, stealing bits and pieces off of bikes and strollers

A local mom reports about a theft that took place in the garage of her building, located on NE 65th St at 4th Ave NE, on Sunday night (Dec. 12, 2010). Sometime during the night, her brand-new baby stroller was stolen. The thief or thieves also stole bits and pieces off other equipment nearby.  They removed screws, CatEye lights, and seats off of two bicycles and completely removed all of the parts off of a third. Storm knocks out power in north Green Lake

Shortly after midnight this morning (Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010), a spectacular thunder and lightning storm hit Seattle. The National Weather Service issued the following “Short Term Forecast“: A STRONG LINE OF SHOWERS AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS ASSOCIATED WITH A STRONG COLD FRONT WILL PRODUCE BRIEF SOUTHWEST WIND GUSTS TO 55 MPH AS IT PASSES.
