A new Metro bus shelter is coming soon to Woodlawn Ave NE at Latona Ave NE in east Green Lake. According to Metro user Andrew, the bus stop is very popular. ”The use has dramatically increased,” Andrew told me, “since Metro consolidated stops along Route 16.” (You can read about last November’s changes to Route 16 here.) The King County Department of Transportation has already laid down some concrete at the bus stop and the new shelter will be installed in January 2011. It will be a single-unit cantilevered style, according to Linda Thielke of KCDOT.

Parks Department cancels plans for new Lower Woodland Skatepark lighting
Back in October, Seattle Parks and Recreation announced that new lights would soon be installed at the Lower Woodland Skatepark. Reaction to the plan was mixed, as evidenced by the differing views that were expressed in the comments left on our October story about the proposed new lighting. Some commenters questioned the expense of the lights. ”Does the City have money to waste on lights while laying off librarians and other personnel?” asked one. ”I keep hearing about budget cuts EXCEPT when it’s time to write a check for a truly terrible idea,” added another. The latest word from the…
Big changes coming soon to the Green Lake Community Center
In January, the 2011 City of Seattle Budget will take effect. The new budget will impact many city departments, including Parks and Recreation. Initially, Mayor McGinn proposed severe cuts to the Green Lake Community Center. His budget limited drop-in access to just 15 hours a week, cut 6.0 FTE staff positions, and called for the conversion of three rooms, including the tot play space, into offices. After significant public outcry, City Council scaled these cuts back. They added 15 more weekly drop-in hours and a part-time Recreation Leader position to the Green Lake Community Center. They also ensured that the preschool…
Seattle Parks and Recreation seeks community members for Community Center Advisory Team
Many community centers, including the Green Lake Community Center, were hit hard by the 2011 City of Seattle budget. (You can read about the impacts to the Green Lake Community Center here.) As a result, Seattle Parks and Recreation has been asked by the City Council to re-think how community centers are operated. This process will include public meetings and the creation of a Community Center Advisory Team. Seattle Parks and Recreation is looking for community members to participate on the Advisory Team. Advisory Team meetings will occur twice a month from January to May, 2011. The team will be…
