The Green Lake Gobble & Mashed Potato Munch Off is returning to Green Lake this Sunday (Nov. 21, 2010).  1,700 people are expected to attend.

The event begins at 9:10 a.m. with a free Kids Dash, followed by a 5K run/walk at 9:30 a.m. and the Mashed Potato Munch Off at 10:45 a.m. The race course can be viewed here.

Partial proceeds, as well as canned food collected onsite, will be donated to Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission, the official event benefactor.

The event comes to us courtesy of Pro-Motion Events, the same folks behind Green Lake’s Love ‘em or Leave ‘em Valentine’s Day Dash and the Top Pot Doughnuts 5K Doughnut Dash.

Garett Slettebak, Director of Marketing for Pro-Motion Events, sent us this information about the Mashed Potato Munch Off:

As part of the second annual Green Lake Gobble & Mashed Potato Munch Off event, this competitive eating contest will allow eight lucky contestants to battle against each other as they all try to eat as much mashed potatoes as possible within the contest’s 4-minute time period.

In addition to the fame day-of, the winner will also win some hard earned cash, a crown and a life-time entry into the 5K run/walk portion of the event.

This is an absolutely shameful event. “2 mins. to consume as much as you can” for hunger. “it pays to be homeless” really. What’s next Green lake? A chocolate cake eating contest to raise money for diabetes. In the 2 minutes it took these people to gorge themselves 120 people died of starvation. It makes no sense to me why you would choose a food eating contest to raise money for hungry people. I thought this side of town was a bit smarter than that.
