Sure you could just put your feet up on Halloween morning and wait for the trick or treaters, but where’s the fun in that? Instead, why not proactively burn some pre-candy calories, banking them for your treat of choice later, and help Daniel Bagley Elementary build a safer, greener playfield?
The fun low-impact 1K and 5K walk/fun run is being held on Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010. The run, sponsored by Super Jock ‘n Jill and American Athlete, circles Lower Woodland Park and is open to everyone. The kids’ 1K dash begins at 9 a.m., followed by a 5K run at 9:30; the course is described as “slightly hilly.”
Costumes are welcome, adding some bonus mileage to your costume’s “live” time. Awards will be given for best overall costumes and to the top three male/female finishers in both races. All proceeds will directly support the Green Field Project at Daniel Bagley Elementary School.
Having just remade Bagley’s garden, the well-used but cracked asphalt playground was a clear choice for the next makeover. The Green Field Project is creating a safer, more beautiful play space for Bagley students and the surrounding neighborhood to enjoy. The projected total cost to complete the field’s construction is $200,000. Since spring, the project has raised more than $135,000 (including a $97,500 matching grant from the City of Seattle), but $52,500 is still needed, hence the Fun Run.
The project consists of: replacing much of the existing asphalt on the playground with 10,000 square feet of grass, adding 5,000 square feet of new trees and native plantings, new pervious asphalt, and a permanent running track. The pervious asphalt is a salmon-friendly surface as it reduces water runoff, and the new plantings will enhance both the air quality and property values.
The Green Field Committee’s goal is to have the field ready for trampling by Sept. 2011. Maybe next year’s Jogathon runners will have a spanking new track.
So the big question remains: will there be more Ninjas, Ariels or Percy Jacksons running this Halloween? We’ll keep you posted.
