The Green Lake Community Center (7201 E Green Lake Dr N) temporarily closed this afternoon (Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010). As of 3 p.m., the center is still closed, although word from Parks is that it will open later today or tomorrow. For the most up-to-date information, call the center directly at (206) 684-0780.
Green Lake Community Center has been closed for the remainder of the day, after workers uncovered asbestos mastic under the flooring in the lobby.
Parks employees were working on a project in the community center lobby as part of Evans Pool major maintenance project when they discovered that the sub-flooring mastic under the surface flooring was 2% asbestos.
The public and employees have been asked to leave the building until air quality monitoring equipment can establish that safe air limits are present. This is considered a minor incidence of disturbing normally adhered asbestos, and it is anticipated that the air in the center has not been compromised. However, it is standard procedure to absolutely insure this is true. Employees and consultants who are certified in asbestos removal and air quality monitoring are working the site at this time.
When clean air standards are positively certified, the center will open for normal operating hours later today or on Friday.
Update, 5 p.m.: Joelle Hammerstad from the Parks and Recreation Communications Office just told us that the Green Lake Community Center is “on track to open tomorrow.”
