Squealing pigs heard roaming an alley in east Green Lake last night

What do you think? (8 Comments) September 23, 2010 at 10:34AM

My Green Lake reader Julie wrote us this morning (Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010) to report that, around midnight last night, she heard some pigs roaming the alley behind her house, located at Woodlawn Ave N & N 63rd St.

The pigs, Julie says, woke her up.  “There must have been at least three of them,” Julie says.  “There was one outside my window and I heard more across the alley.  They were so loud with their snorting and squealing.”

Coincidentally, Ordinance 123378, Seattle’s Urban Agriculture Ordinance, went into effect today.  The ordinance allows for pigs to be kept in the city.  However, only one miniature potbelly pig per business establishment or dwelling unit is permitted.

Julie has never seen pigs in the neighborhood before, although some of her urban-farming neighbors do keep chickens.

Julie called the Pigs Peace Sanctuary, who reported that they do not know of any pigs that live in the area.  We checked in with Gigi Allianic, Public Relations Manager at Woodland Park Zoo. “I have received no reports of any pigs escaping from the zoo,” Allianic said.  She also pointed out that the zoo only houses one pig.

Did you hear the rogue pigs last night, or do you know where their home is?  Let us know in the comments below.

Fighting raccoons can also make squealing sounds. I was rudely awoken in a campground a few years ago when some raccoons were viciously fighting on a nearby lake shore. Being naive and alone in my tent I thought a bear was attacking a pig. My campmates cleared it up for me the next morning.

Either that or there’s a rogue manbearpig in Green Lake.

Yes I do hear raccoons all the time in the alley but these were definitely pigs. I even just googled pig sounds just to make sure and actually raccoon sounds and it was for sure pigs. The snorting was soooooo loud. And the squealing was so loud. It was actually pretty scary. I didn’t know the rules of owning pigs so if someone has more than one and they got out, then they probably won’t want to talk about it. But I’m telling you….it was pigs! Hahahaha…

I’ve seen pigs in Greenlake. However, they are usually standing up on their hind legs outside of The Little Red Hen. Heh.
