My Green Lake reader Julie wrote us this morning (Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010) to report that, around midnight last night, she heard some pigs roaming the alley behind her house, located at Woodlawn Ave N & N 63rd St.
The pigs, Julie says, woke her up. “There must have been at least three of them,” Julie says. “There was one outside my window and I heard more across the alley. They were so loud with their snorting and squealing.”
Coincidentally, Ordinance 123378, Seattle’s Urban Agriculture Ordinance, went into effect today. The ordinance allows for pigs to be kept in the city. However, only one miniature potbelly pig per business establishment or dwelling unit is permitted.
Julie has never seen pigs in the neighborhood before, although some of her urban-farming neighbors do keep chickens.
Julie called the Pigs Peace Sanctuary, who reported that they do not know of any pigs that live in the area. We checked in with Gigi Allianic, Public Relations Manager at Woodland Park Zoo. “I have received no reports of any pigs escaping from the zoo,” Allianic said. She also pointed out that the zoo only houses one pig.
Did you hear the rogue pigs last night, or do you know where their home is? Let us know in the comments below.
