Green Lake gym American Athlete to replace Kids Club with cycling studio

American Athlete (7203 Woodlawn Ave NE) is ending Kids Club, its on-site childcare program. My Green Lake reader Anne Beasley Weber wrote to us yesterday with the news.  “I love this gym,” she said.  “It’s seriously like the old Cheers TV show – the place where everyone knows your name.”  However, due to the upcoming Kids Club closure, Anne says many neighborhood parents are in a bind.  “Parents are scrambling to figure out what to do with their membership,” she said, “or how to find alternative childcare.  I feel that the owner has shut out families with kids under the…

Mayor gives 2011 City of Seattle Budget Address: Green Lake Community Center to operate under "Limited-Use Status"

Updated, 3:35 p.m. The City of Seattle is facing a $67 million general fund deficit for 2011. Today (Monday, Sept. 27, 2010) we heard from Mayor Mike McGinn, who presented his budget recommendations to Seattle City Council.  An overview can be found on the mayor’s website, and a PDF that runs through the numbers can be found here. UPDATE, 1 p.m.: The latest word from the Mayor is that he is proposing that the Green Lake Community Center will have “reduced operating hours.” _____________ Mayor Mike McGinn will give his 2011 City of Seattle Budget Address at 12 p.m. today (Monday, Sept. 27, 2010).  The speech will be livestreamed online by the Seattle Channel. Metro Transit bus service changes begin Saturday Oct. 2

King County Metro Transit‘s fall service changes begin Saturday (October 2, 2010). Metro is making some scheduling and routing changes this fall to save money, preserve bus service, and operate more efficiently. In some cases, you may notice differences in the schedule for your route, along with longer wait times for transfers or irregular spacing between bus trips. Due to reduced sales-tax revenue for transit, Metro also had to eliminate some trips on designated routes.  Select trips will be discontinued on routes serving the Green Lake neighborhood, including Route 16, Route 26, and Route 242. Out of the Darkness Walk coming to Green Lake Park October 10

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is holding its annual Out of the Darkness Walk on Sunday, October 10, 2010 at Green Lake Park.  Check-in time starts at 8 a.m. and the walk begins at 9 a.m. Out of the Darkness Community Walks will take place in over 200 communities across the country this fall.  Proceeds from the walk are are used to raise money for AFSP’s research and education programs.
