The Seattle Public Theater (SPT) at the Green Lake Bathhouse (7312 West Green Lake Dr N) invites you to Theresa Rebeck’s suspenseful thriller, Mauritius, running October 1-24, 2010.
Surprisingly, stamp collecting is riskier than one might think. Jackie and Mary are half-sisters whose mother’s death leaves them in possession of a rare stamp collection. But which sister actually owns the stamps? Which of three dealers can be trusted with their sale? Mauritius is a gripping new play from the Pulitzer-prize nominated author who’s been called a “female David Mamet.”
“The reason I wanted to direct the play is that I am concerned about this country, “says Russ Banham. “In times of great uncertainty, when reliable social and economic structures fail and familial connections sever, primitive survival instincts revive and rule. It’s “dog eat dog” for the last scraps of sustenance.” He adds, “We’ve set the play in Detroit because it is a microcosm of problems that are spreading elsewhere.”
Ms. Rebeck finally made her Broadway debut with Mauritius in 2007, however the theater world first took notice in 1992 when she published Spike Heels. She has written approximately one play per year since. She holds three degrees from Brandeis University and is a self-described workaholic. Her play Omnium Gatherum was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in 2004. In television, Ms. Rebeck has written for many shows including the hits L.A. Law and Third Watch and has been a writer/producer for Canterbury’s Law, Law and Order: Criminal Intent and NYPD Blue, for which she won a Peabody Award. A native of Cincinnati, Rebeck now lives in Brooklyn with her husband and two children and is a strong advocate for women playwrights.
“The stamps mean something desperate to all of them,” says Ms. Rebeck. “In some ways the stamps mean life to them. I’m a believer that all of us are broken in some way, and there’s a hole in our heart that we pour our own destruction or our children or our stamp collection into.” (as quoted from the New York Times)
Directed by Banham, Mauritius stars Mark Fullerton, Heather Hawkins, Joseph P. McCarthy, Carolyn Marie Monroe and John Murray.
