Possible door-to-door scam reported in Green Lake

What do you think? (2 Comments) September 19, 2010 at 7:17PM

A My Green Lake tipster reports that at around 3 p.m. this afternoon (Sunday, Sept 19, 2010), a man knocked on her door in east Green Lake.  He introduced himself as a new neighbor and said that he had locked himself out of his house.

“He said he needed $75 to pay the locksmith,” says the tipster, “but only had $71. I almost fell for it, until on a hunch I asked him which house he lived in and he couldn’t answer me specifically.  Probably harmless, but my husband informed me they just reported about this scam on Dateline.”

Two years ago (October 2008), a string of nine commenters on Central District News reported on a man going door-to-door with an almost identical story:

The man introduced himself as a new neighbor living in the condos next door, which are actually townhomes. The man proceeded by saying that his partner is caucasian and works for Microsoft. Then he explained that he locked himself outside and needed to pay the locksmith $25 but he only had $21. He asked if my boyfriend could give him $4.

Has anyone else in the Green Lake neighborhood had a similar encounter?

Yes, we had someone knock on our door in East Greenlake earlier this week–Friday evening–in a secured building. He said he worked for the Seattle Times. However, we don’t allow solicitors in the building, and it is a secure building, so it was unclear how he entered. My husband told him we weren’t interested and shooed him away. A few minutes later someone knocked again, and I told him not to answer the door as it seemed really suspicious. Anyway, reading this made me pretty sure it was the same person. But, there is a small chance that the Seattle times forced their way into our building to try to solicit delivery customers on a Friday night?
