Pedestrian struck while jaywalking at 67th and Aurora

What do you think? (4 Comments) September 22, 2010 at 3:56PM

A pedestrian was struck on Aurora Ave N at N 67th St, just west of Green Lake Park, shortly after noon today (Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010).

The man was crossing Aurora from the west side, near Greenlake Farmers Market.  Although there is a crosswalk at N 68th St, he was jaywalking at N 67th St.

The man was struck by a northbound van in the inside lane. The impact of the crash broke the van’s front headlight.

Gideon Powell, the driver of the van, told me that after his van hit the pedestrian, the man was then “run over” by another northbound truck in the center lane.

According to the Seattle Police Department blotter, the struck man was transported by SFD medics to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.  Neither one of the involved drivers were injured.

Three emergency response units were sent to the scene at 12:16 p.m.   In addition to sirens, many neighborhood residents also heard helicopters.   Those were news helicopters, including one sent by KIRO 7.

Gideon Powell, the driver of the van, spoke with KIRO.  Here is my recording of that interview (Thank you, KIRO):

Following the collision, all three lanes of northbound Aurora Ave N were completely blocked off to traffic while Traffic Collision Investigation Squad detectives investigated the scene.

Traffic was diverted eastbound onto West Green Lake Way N, creating long lines of traffic congestion around the lake.

At 3 p.m., one of the disabled vehicles was still blocking the outside lane of northbound Aurora Ave N.  Traffic, however, was clear, and the vehicle was being towed.

Not that I don’t feel badly that someone got hit, and I certainly hope he makes a full recovery, but in that area people seem to make darting across Aurora a regular thing, despite dividers between the north and south lanes. I’ve got to wonder what makes someone try that on such a busy, fast street?

Especially considering there’s a crosswalk so close by. I feel bad for everyone involved.
