Green Lake gym American Athlete to replace Kids Club with cycling studio

What do you think? (8 Comments) September 28, 2010 at 10:28AM

American Athlete (7203 Woodlawn Ave NE) is ending Kids Club, its on-site childcare program.

My Green Lake reader Anne Beasley Weber wrote to us yesterday with the news.  “I love this gym,” she said.  “It’s seriously like the old Cheers TV show – the place where everyone knows your name.”  However, due to the upcoming Kids Club closure, Anne says many neighborhood parents are in a bind.  “Parents are scrambling to figure out what to do with their membership,” she said, “or how to find alternative childcare.  I feel that the owner has shut out families with kids under the age of five from being members.”

I spoke with American Athlete owner Tony Held today.  Tony confirmed that the Kids Club will be closing this Thursday (Sept. 30, 2010).  However, he said that “it is absolutely false” to say that parents are scrambling. “I’ve worked it out with everybody,” he said.

A dedicated cycling studio will be replacing the Kids Club, which looks out over Woodlawn Ave NE.  The studio will hold sixteen bicycles and will open October 11.

I’m also a member of the gym, and really value the presence of these moms in our community. I’m sad American Athlete couldn’t make the childcare work, but perhaps there’s an opportunity to partner with the wonderful children’s bookstore across the street? Surely there is an unemployed, fabulous-with-kids, responsible and professional teacher/nanny type out there who could step in and fill this need?!

How can he say he’s worked it out with everybody? That just sounds a little defensive with blinders on. Tony’s a nice guy and had to make a business decision, better to just tell everyone it was costing the business and he couldn’t afford to keep it.

How can YOU say he hasn’t worked it out with everybody? Sounds a little presumptious to me.

As another mom ( that doesn’t go to this gym) I did notice some posts on our neighborhood moms group with requests for gym recommendations with childcare from moms that belong to this gym.
