Following up on two successful community work parties earlier this summer, the Green Lake Elementary School Garden Club again invites the community to lend a hand at the school’s Olallie Native Garden.

Green Lake Elementary parents are using funding from the City of Seattle’s Neighborhood Matching Fund to improve the existing garden by making it accessible to kids with disabilities, adding an outdoor classroom for instructional activities and constructing sustainable elements to be enjoyed by the whole neighborhood.

Yvette Herrera Greer of the Garden Club tells us that the green roof demonstration shed building is complete, thanks in large part to volunteers Carl Berg of Viking Craftsman and Mike O’Leary.  As soon as the Garden Club gets plants, hopefully this weekend, the roof of the shed will planted.

The rammed earth benches are also complete, Yvette says.  “They were made possible primarily due to Bert Bradley, who taught and coached our volunteers, some of which were from ecobuild groups he belongs to.”  An eagle scout candidate has taken on the role of project manager and is working on a “living room”concept: benches with a chess table in between.

The next work parties will be Saturday and Sunday, August 28 and 29, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., at Green Lake Elementary School (2400 N 65th St). This time around, volunteers will be finishing the new gravel path using shovels and a plate compactor.

You are invited to come for the whole day or just a few hours.  Kids and teens are welcome.  Please bring gloves and a water bottle and be prepared to get dirty.  If you can, bring shovels.
