The Seattle Public Library system will shut down Monday, Aug. 30 through Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010 due to citywide budget cuts. Regular Library operations will resume Tuesday, Sept. 7 after the Monday, Sept. 6 Labor Day Holiday. Now is the time to stock up on Library books, music CDs and movie DVDs and pick up any items on hold. No Library materials will accrue fines or will be due during the closure. All city departments have implemented cuts to help address a total $67 million gap in the 2010 city budget. The Library is funded from the city general fund….

Motion Boardshop moving to 84th and Aurora
We just received word that a longboard and kiteboard specialty shop is moving into the area. On Wednesday, September 1, 2010, Motion Boardshop (MOBO) will move to 8310 Aurora Ave N. The location was formerly occupied by Karin’s Beauty Supplies. Motion Boardshop has been in business in Lake Forest Park since 2008. The move to Aurora Ave will secure them more space and parking. Jason Clack, MOBO’s owner, says that the shop’s proximity to Green Lake and the Woodland Skatepark will make the location convenient for standup paddleboard rentals and skateboard sales. House fire in Tangletown
At 8:48 a.m. this morning (Monday, August 23, 2010), fourteen emergency response units were called to a fire at 2353 N 57th St. While initial scanner chatter indicated that the house may be abandoned and that the fire was a “furnace backfire,” later reports indicated that the house may be occupied. Streets around the scene were closed to traffic following the fire. Firefighters were packing up by 9:10 a.m., and by 9:15 a.m., all units except for one were called away from the scene. Seedsaving workshop and seed swap in Green Lake Saturday night
Permaculture educator Marisha Auerbach is bringing her “Seedsaving as an Activist Practice” workshop to Green Lake. A seed exchange will follow the presentation. The workshop is tomorrow night (Saturday, August 21, 2010), 7-9 p.m., at Yogalife’s Greenlake Studio (7200 Woodlawn Ave NE). The cost is $7 – $10 (sliding scale).
