Following up on a successful community work party last weekend, the Green Lake Elementary School PTA and Olallie Garden Club again invite the community to lend a hand at the school’s Olallie Native Garden.

Green Lake Elementary parents are using funding from the City of Seattle’s Neighborhood Matching Fund to improve the existing garden by making it accessible to kids with disabilities, adding an outdoor classroom for instructional activities and constructing sustainable elements to be enjoyed by the whole neighborhood.

Last weekend, participants moved rocks, built 90% of a green roof demonstration shed, pruned plants, dug holes to prep for outdoor classroom rammed earth benches and got some benches partially built.

This weekend, volunteers will be putting a green roof on the shed and building rammed earth benches.  Work on the benches, done under the guidance of sustainable building professional Bert Bradley, consists of shoveling and mixing sand and gravel.  The mixture is then layered and tamped down into bench molds.  The benches will become an outdoor classroom seating area.

The work parties will be Saturday, August 7 and Sunday, August 8, 2010, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., at Green Lake Elementary School (2400 N 65th St).  Come for the whole day or just a few hours.  Kids and teens are welcome.

Snacks and water will be provided.  Please bring gloves and a water bottle and be prepared to get dirty.  If you can, bring shovels and hand tools.

RSVP to olalliegles [at] gmail.com.  In order to help organizers plan snacks, please indicate when you plan to participate.
