More than 100 balloons strung across Green Lake Sunday night

What do you think? (2 Comments) August 3, 2010 at 3:36PM

Did you see a line of glowing balloons strung over Green Lake Sunday night (August 1, 2010)?

Sam Lamb wrote to tell us that the balloons went up in celebration of her mother-in-law’s 60th birthday.

Approximately 900-1000 feet of heavy-gauge fishing line was used to connect about 110 balloons filled with helium and colored LED lights.  The project began at 8 p.m.  At first, the lights inside each balloon could not be seen, but as it grew darker outside the colors became more visible.

The line of balloons began at the north dock.  “We had initially intended to secure the beginning of the line to a boat and row it across the lake,” Sam says, “but the wind was so mild and it was just slightly south blowing, so the string made a natural line directly from the dock and crossed the lake on it’s own.  As it got darker the line looked really amazing and the winds changed so for awhile the balloons started to rise straight up into the air and then slightly north of where we were. It was really incredible. I think the could only be seen at a fairly close distance (around the lake and maybe out a few blocks) but I think all who saw it felt moved by it.”
