This week Green Lake United Methodist Church (6415 1st Ave NE) welcomed Katie Stickney, pastoral counselor, who began offering sliding-scale and low-income counseling to the Green Lake neighborhood.  Katie is a United Methodist clergy person who works full time as a counselor.

“Pastoral counselor” is not an incredibly common term.  Simply put, a pastoral counselor is a psychotherapist who has a grounding in general therapeutic theory and practice as well as specialized training in the area of spirituality.  Katie works with clients from a variety of beliefs, including those who might identify as agnostic or atheist.  While she has an expertise in spirituality, it is up to the client to decide how much that is part of their work with her.

Katie works with individuals and couples on a sliding scale, including folks on very little or no income.  In addition to that, she provides groups and workshops periodically, pre-marriage/commitment counseling, and wedding officiation.

Katie’s areas of expertise include spirituality, sexual orientation and gender (including transgender, genderqueer, etc.), depression and anxiety, body image, and grief & loss.  She will be available at Green Lake United Methodist on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Katie has an M.A. Pastoral Counseling from Seattle University and is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate.  You can find out more about her at www.katiestickney.com.
