Several car prowls reported in Green Lake

It’s looking as though another bout of car prowls has hit Green Lake.

My Green Lake reader Nicole sent us this note yesterday:

We live on the 5800 block of Mckinley Place North and we had a car break last night [Friday, June 18, 2010].  They ransacked our car and left the door ajar.  Most likely they left disappointed because we have nothing of value inside and and endless supply of stale fish crackers on the floor (we have kids).

On Thursday, June 17, word of car prowls at Roosevelt Way NE & NE 71st St and Wallingford Ave N & East Green Lake Dr N, as well as four at Densmore Ave N & East Green Lake Dr N, came across the Greenlake Moms yahoo list.

Karen alerted us, via Facebook, that a few cars on NE 65th St were broken into on Monday, June 14.

Karynne7 reports that a laptop was stolen out of a car parked at 4th Ave NE & Woodlawn Ave NE last week.

We also heard from Barry that several items were stolen from a car parked at NE 70th St & Woodlawn Ave NE on Friday, June 11 at noon.

And, mmmmrgrif shared this:

My daughter’s car’s front passenger window was broken in on May 28 and her purse was stolen. This happened in the space of 5 minutes at 10 am on a Friday morning on the corner of Green Lake Way N and Meridian.

The next day another neighbor’s car was broken into and a backpack with a laptop was stolen. This was on the same corner at virtually the same time.

Yesterday, the Bellevue Police called to say they had caught a woman who was ordering checks with my daughter’s information. This same woman had 8 other people’s identification cards.

That’s a total of at least fourteen recent car prowls in the neighborhood.

As seattlepi.com reporter Casey McNerthney often reminds us, an analysis of police incident reports from 1989 to 2007 showed the 7200 block of E Green Lake Dr N and the 7300 block of W Green Lake Dr N to be among the top ten locations for Seattle car prowls.

Be careful out there, Green Lake residents and visitors!

My friend who lives on 4th and Woodlawn had her laptop stolen out of her car last week. My car was broken into last September and my stereo was taken. I live on 65th and 2nd. Most definitely be careful, and do NOT leave your valuables in your car.

Thanks for letting us know, Karynne7. I've updated the post with the information you shared about your friend's laptop. Ugh, that would be a nightmare to have a laptop stolen…hope she's doing ok.

Thanks for the note, mmmmrgrif. Glad to hear that the woman was caught.

Hey, was your daughter's purse by any chance red or white? Neither of these purses has been claimed: http://www.mygreenlake.com/2010/06/found-purses/ — it would be great if one of them was hers! Drop me a line if it happens to have been red or white….

We live just off Latona near Greenlake. Mail theft has been a problem for a lot of our neighbors too, which in and of itself doesn't sound so bad but apparently the thieves use the mail for identity theft. And that really sucks! We have a good quality wall-mount locking mailbox since on our street the mailman comes right to the house. They have some really nice ones at Maple Leaf Ace Hardware.

    Thanks for the note, Jenny!

Side note: Isn't the mailman in our area (I live near you, I think) a super-nice guy? Love him!

Yes, he's a gem. Even my Doberman likes him :-)

Yep, it's definitely an issue in this neighborhood. We had the faceplate for our car stereo stolen a year or so ago, and since then we don't leave anything even vaguely important in our car. I imagine these folks are pretty methodical about it and quickly check every car on their route. Because – really – nothing about our car screams “I have valuable things in me.”

We just found a purse outside our house with the ID's missing but wallet and a few other things intact. There was broken glass in the purse. I located the owner by calling her parents in Indiana, whose name was on an insurance car. Her car was parked at the bath house theathre parking lot.

Yikes. Thanks for your continuing reports, everyone, and nice work, mmmmrgrif!

Actually, it was two women's purses, as the first woman came to pick up her purse, she said some of the stuff wasn't hers, and that she had noticed that the car parked next to her had suffered the same fate of a smashed-in-window. I found the other woman on facebook and messaged her and she is coming by tomorrow to pick up her stuff.
