A peek inside the Green Lake fallout shelter

What do you think? (5 Comments) May 12, 2010 at 10:37PM

Earlier this year, we brought you this story about Green Lake’s four bomb shelters.  The biggest, under I-5 at Weedin Place NE, has gotten some attention in the press lately.

In April, “Mossback” Knute Berger wrote an excellent piece about the I-5 bomb shelter on Crosscut.com, and last night (May 11, 2010) KOMO aired this look inside:

Many thanks to My Green Lake tipsters Nic George and Daniel for drawing our attention to these two mentions of our neighborhood in the media.  Have a tip?  We’d love to hear from you.

Wow, I had no idea the place was so big! Lucky her. I'd love to visit someday… this place should definitely be preserved. What great archival footage, too!

I'm somewhat surprised this space hasn't been converted to some other use, unless the cost of getting it up to spec is too much or the overhead freeway poses a risk. Keeping it in its current state, where its history is told every 5 or 10 years in an occasional news story and it attracts weeds, rodents and graffiti, seems a waste. Is anyone aware of efforts to convert this space?
