The 2010 Green Lake Milk Carton Derby

What do you think? (1 Comment) May 1, 2010 at 10:03AM

This summer’s Green Lake Milk Carton Derby, a Seafair tradition since 1972, will be Saturday, July 10, 2010, 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. (8:30 a.m. registration).

The milk carton rafts take off from the southwest corner of Green Lake, near the Aqua Theater and the Green Lake Small Craft Center (5900 West Green Lake Way N).

It’s Seafair’s largest summer boat race… on Green Lake! Powered by summer and fueled by fun, nothing kicks off the Seafair summer celebration better than the excitement and creativity of the Pirate’s Booty Milk Carton Derby. The Derby offers a memorable day for participants and spectators, as nearly 100 wacky milk carton watercraft compete for prizes valuing $10,000!

For those looking to stay dry, there will be plenty of activities on shore as well. Make sure to check out the different exhibitors offering anything from possible life vest to laundry detergent. Past participants in the event have ranged from the Sea Gals to Papa Murphys. Onsite there will also be a kids bounce house and plenty of food booths lining the shores.

There are six entry categories: Open (design over speed), Racing (the intent is primarily speed), Military (at least one crew member must be active duty), Show Boat (the most unique & imaginative design), Groups/Commercial (a company name, logo or slogan on the vessel), and Open Family (kids up to age 13 accompanied by at least one adult).

Registration is free and closes July 8, 2010.

Milk carton raft design specs and directions are available on, and there will be live demonstrations of milk carton boat building at this year’s Northwest Folklife festival.

Volunteers will be needed at the Milk Carton Derby to assist staff with directing setup procedures, monitoring the kids’ show and assisting recycling efforts on the Green Team.
