McDonald School Meetings

McDonald School Meetings

Community members are invited to two workshops regarding play structures to add to the playground at McDonald Elementary School at 54th and Latona.

On March 23, 7-9 pm, the Friends of McDonald School will hold an open community meeting at Green Lake Elementary School to choose the type of playground equipment to purchase for the renovated McDonald Elementary School. Funding will come from two grants (Department of Neighborhoods Neighborhood Matching Funds Program and King County Youth Sports Facilities Grants Program), and from community members’ & employer donations.  Seattle Schools will also provide support.

On April 27, 7-9 pm, another workshop, also at Green Lake Elementary, is scheduled, to select a design from one of several playground equipment vendors.

Later this spring Friends will recruit community volunteers to install the equipment under supervision.  Installation is currently scheduled for June 26-27.

Update, Thursday, March 18, 2010, from Kathleen Ellsbury:

With regard to the McDonald School playground improvements:  because of some delays in planning for site preparation at McDonald School, the community workshop March 23 (7-9 pm) will only select TYPES (general categories) of playground equipment, not an actual design or proposal.   We will have some poster boards for participants to “react to” and vote on, to see what generally appeals to people.  In the meantime, we encourage adults to observe and ask kids what playground equipment they particularly like, and bring that to the workshop, or let me know.

We will not be able to select a design until after a bidding process in April, if all goes as we hope.

Whatever we choose in the end will need the approval of the School District.
